In the world of off-roaders, it’s hard to find an SUV that’s as tough as the Land Cruiser Prado. The iconic SUV has been around for ages but even that doesn’t stop it to be one of the favorite choices among off-road enthusiasts. Simply, no other carmaker offers such a combination of off-road performance, luxury and reliability. Still, the current generation is getting old. It’s been around since 2009 and it’s about time to see a redesign, despite the recent updates. According to the latest reports, the all-new model is coming already in the next year, and it will bring a new, hybrid powertrain. We expect it to debut as the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Hybrid.
Of course, the new hybrid powertrain won’t be the only big novelty. This redesign will bring many other things, including a new platform, new styling, interior design and many other things. All these changes should help Land Cruiser Prado to remain one of the most desirable off-roaders on the market.
2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Hybrid Powertrain
One of the most interesting novelties of this redesign will be the new hybrid powertrain. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Hybrid will debut next year and we expect to see a new hybrid system, different from what we’ve been seeing from Toyota so far.
This system will probably be the same or very similar to the one found in the North American Toyota Crown. That would mean a system that’s based on a 2.4-liter turbo-four engine, which would provide a max output of around 350 horsepower. Interestingly, this system will also bring a new transmission, a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Naturally, four-wheel-drive will be standard and we are pretty sure that the company will keep the traditional mechanical differential, rather than just installing another electric motor.
Besides the new hybrid powertrain, we also expect that the new generation will carry on with a 2.8-liter turbodiesel in many markets, including Australia. This engine puts out around 204 horsepower and 500Nm of torque and we believe it will come with a new transmission. Some sources also speculate about the new 3.3-liter V6 turbodiesel that debuted in the LC 300. Finally, the 2.4-liter turbo-four petrol engine might come as a replacement for the old 4.0-liter V6 in some parts of the world.
2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Hybrid Design
This will be a full redesign after almost 15 years and therefore, we have pretty big expectations. First of all, we count on a new platform. Of course, this would mean the company’s new TNGA-F platform, the same one that underpins the Land Cruiser 300, as well as models like Tundra and Sequoia. We count on various improvements, including massive weight reduction.
In terms of the exterior design, we expect that the new model will keep very similar dimensions. The wheelbase will also remain pretty much the same, which will help this SUV retain excellent off-road performances. On the other hand, we will see a new styling, which should bring evolutionary changes only. Of course, some inspiration would be taken from the new Land Cruiser 300, but we would also expect a fine portion of exclusive styling details.
The current model features pretty impressive build quality but it started to show signs of aging. That’s why we have big expectations from the new model. We count on a completely new dashboard design, which would feature a new shape, finer materials and more tech goodies. There’s no doubt that the new cabin will feature excellent build quality, just like the current generation. We also count on new tech features, including goodies like a bigger infotainment screen with new software, a digital instrument cluster, more connectivity options and a full load of advanced driver-assistance features.
As we already mentioned, the new generation probably won’t bring bigger changes regarding the size. Therefore, we presume that the amount of space will also remain pretty similar to the current model. In other words, the first and the second rows of seats will remain pretty generous with space, while the third row will remain tight.
2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Hybrid Release Date
At this point, we are still waiting to hear something from the officials but we presume the new model will arrive sometime in the second half of 2024.
