The legendary SUV is one of the most intriguing things in today’s automotive market. Not only that it is outdated but as it gets older, it gets more and more popular. We’ve been witnessing record sales numbers in the past few years and that may be the reason why Toyota isn’t rushing with the redesign, even though the current generation has been around since 2009. Still, everything has its end, and so does the current generation. If we can trust the latest reports, the all-new, 6th generation will arrive sometime in the next year, like the 2024 Toyota 4Runner.
At this point, Toyota keeps most details a secret. Still, we know what to expect from the next generation, at least in terms of base design characteristics. The new 4Runner definitely won’t abandon the current design philosophy and once again, we will see a genuine body-on-frame SUV, with uncompromised off-road performance.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Design
As we’ve just mentioned, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner is about to finally get a full redesign. While most details are unknown at this point, it’s pretty much for sure that the new generation will remain a genuine BoF SUV. Of course, we expect it will get a new platform, a modified version of the TNGA-F platform, which already debuted in Toyota’s full-size lineup, which includes models like Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser.
Compared to the previous generation, the new 4Runner will come with a little bit more refined design approach. This particularly refers to the suspension setup, which should make this SUV more on-road friendly than before. Still, off-road performances won’t be compromised. The new model will come with independent front suspension, while the rear end will keep the solid axle, though with new multi-link coil springs.
When it comes to the exterior design, we don’t expect to see any radical changes. The overall shape won’t change drastically, while the overall dimensions should remain similar as well. So, you may count on an SUV that measures around 110 inches in wheelbase and a little bit more than 190 inches in total length.
When it comes to styling, we expect that the Japanese manufacturer will implement the brand’s latest design language, which already debuted in models like Tundra and Sequoia. Of course, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner will also come with lots of exclusive details, especially in some special versions, such as the off-road-focused TRD Pro trim.
The current model looks really outdated in this aspect, so the expectations from the 2024 Toyota 4Runner are high. We count on a completely new design, with significant improvements regarding materials and overall quality. Naturally, we count on modern aesthetics, as well as on a full load of advanced tech features, both in terms of safety and convenience.
As we already mentioned, the new model is about to feature very similar dimensions to the current generation. Therefore, the amount of passenger space should remain pretty similar as well. The front and second-row seats will be spacious and comfortable, while the third row will rather be tight, best for kids.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Engines
Under the hood, Toyota will replace its old and thirsty V6 with something way more modern. At this point, we are still waiting for the official’s confirmation. Still, it looks like the 4.0-liter V6 will be replaced with a 2.4-liter turbo-four, the same one that powers the new Lexus NX. This engine puts out around 275 horsepower, which is similar to the outgoing V6. However, 309 pound-feet of torque is way more and that should ensure much better driving dynamics, especially at lower RPMs.
Along with the new engine, we also expect to see the new transmission. Most likely, the current 5-speed unit will be replaced with a new 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Some sources also speculate about the hybrid version. That model would come with a new system, based on a turbo-four engine. We estimate that the max output will go somewhere between 300 and 350 horsepower.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Release Date and Price
We are still waiting to hear more from the officials. Still it looks like the 2024 Toyota 4Runner could arrive already in the second half of the next year. We estimate that the base models will go around 40.000 dollars, while Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco will remain key competitors.
