Some things don’t happen all that often but when they happen, they make an earthquake. That could be said for the legendary Land Cruser. The new generation has finally arrived, after 14 years, which seems too long by any standard of the automotive industry. The new generation debuted for the 2022 model year and therefore, it makes sense not to expect bigger changes for the 2023 Toyota Land Cruiser, which will represent the second model year of the new generation. Still, that may not be completely true.

The new model is still arriving in certain markets and one of the things we expect to see is the new GR Sport trim, which is currently offered in Australia only. We expect it will come to other parts of the world as well. Other than that, we probably won’t be seeing any significant changes compared to the 2022 model year.

We expect to see the 2023 Toyota Land Cruiser on sale in the second half of the year.

2023 Toyota Land Cruiser Design

As we are talking about the second production year, it’s quite obvious that there will be no significant changes. This is quite obvious, as the recent redesign has brought a full load of improvements and new technologies. Of course, it all starts with the platform, which is a body-on-frame version of Toyota’s TNGA architecture. The new model features a lower center of gravity and offers a better driving experience, especially with the upgraded Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. Another important thing to mention is that the new model is significantly lighter compared to its predecessor, around 440 pounds or 200 kilograms.

Of course, the Land Cruiser has always been mostly about off-road performance and the new model is better than ever. It offers 9.1 inches of ground clearance and 32 degrees of approach angle. While that’s quite similar to the previous model, there is a completely new version of the Multi-Terrain Select system, which works way better than before and also comes with two additional modes – Deep Snow and Auto. Naturally, four-wheel drive is standard. Base models come with a locking center differential, while you can opt for a limited-slip rear differential as well.

GR Sport

If you want superior off-road performance, the new GR Sport trim would be the best choice. This model comes with several upgrades over standard models, starting from locking front and rear differentials (base models come with locking center differential). Furthermore, the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System and Adaptive variable suspension are part of the standard equipment.

Besides the maximized off-road performance, this trim level comes with other kinds of upgrades as well. It comes with a modified grille design and bumpers, as well as loads of blacked details that accentuate the model’s off-road potential. Also, you may count on unique 18-wheel black wheels, while the interior comes in a combination of black and red interior trim.

Interior

The new Land Cruiser is also a very luxurious vehicle. Just like the previous generation, this one doesn’t scream luxury either. Instead, it comes with a very subtle dashboard design, which isn’t particularly shiny but features impressive materials and exceptional build quality. Furthermore, we really like the seats, as they look good and they are very comfortable.

Speaking of the seats, the first two rows are very spacious and comfortable. However, the third row is very tight. Considering that the new model kept the same wheelbase as the previous generation, that was pretty much expected.

Base models come equipped with a 9-inch infotainment screen, which is fast and responsive. Higher trim levels bring a bigger 12.3-inch unit. Of course, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are part of the standard equipment, as well as dual-zone climate control. Higher trim levels offer all kinds of upgrades, whether it’s about tech goodies or safety features.

2023 Toyota Land Cruiser Engines

The 2023 Toyota Land Cruiser will continue with the same engine options on the offer. Of course, the most interesting is the new 3.4-liter turbo V6, which features a max output of 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. In markets like Australia, diesel versions are the core of the offer. The old 4.5-liter V8 has been discontinued and the new generation comes with a new 3.3-liter V6 turbodiesel, which features a max output of 304 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque (227kW and 700Nm). Finally, Toyota kept the good-old 4.0-liter V6 for certain markets.

Besides the new engines, there is also a new 10-speed automatic transmission, which does a pretty impressive job too.

2023 Toyota Land Cruiser Release Date and Competition

We expect that the 2023 Toyota Land Cruiser will hit the market sometime in the second half of the year. Key competitors should be models like Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Nissan Armada etc.
