2024 Audi Q5: The Last Generation With Internal Combustion Engines

0

The segment of compact luxury crossover has become one of the most competitive and most demanding segments in the automotive industry. Things are changing pretty fast, so frequent updates and redesigns are required for all those manufacturers who want to keep their models competitive. That’s why the company from Ingolstadt is coming with a new take on its popular compact SUV, which is expected to arrive in the next year, marketed as the 2024 Audi Q5.

This will be a complete redesign, which will certainly bring a lot of changes. However, it looks like most of the changes will be evolutionary. We don’t believe that anything radical could happen, especially if we consider that this will be the last generation to feature internal-combustion engines. That’s why many things will actually carry on to the next generation, including most of the current powertrain options.

The latest reports suggest that the 2024 Audi Q5 will be ready to hit the market sometime in the second half of 2023.

2024 Audi Q5 Redesign

As we’ve just mentioned, this will most likely be the last generation with traditional internal-combustion engines and, therefore, no one expects to see anything radical. Instead, we count on an evolutionary design approach. The test mule has been spotted a couple of times and despite it still wears complete camouflage, it shows a silhouette that’s rather familiar. We expect to see pretty much the same overall shape, as well as very similar dimensions. On the other hand, the front end will probably suffer the most and it should take a lot of inspiration from the new e-tron.

The same thing is with the mechanics. No radical changes are expected in this aspect. The 2024 Audi Q5 will continue to ride on a familiar MLB platform, though that doesn’t mean that we won’t see changes and updates. We count on some modifications on the chassis and particularly on the suspension setup. That especially refers to the rear suspension setup, which currently features some quite rudimental technical solutions, which is probably the reason why this model lags behind its key competitors in terms of ride quality. Of course, by key competitors, we think of Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3.

Interior

This is where we expect to see notable changes. Audi has always been known for excellent interior quality and the outgoing Q5 is no exception. Everything is assembled extremely well but on the other hand, the aesthetics aren’t all that great. The current model looks bland and outdated, so we presume that German designers will pay more attention to this aspect. Still, we don’t believe that the new 2024 Audi Q5 will go far away from the company’s typical design philosophy. We expect to see a conservative design but filled with new details and, of course, all kinds of new tech features.

As we already mentioned, the new generation will keep similar proportions. So, the amount of passenger space should remain largely the same. That’s not a bad thing at all, considering that the current model already stands pretty well in this aspect. On the other hand, we would like to see new, more comfortable seats, because the current ones are some of the worst in the class. Also, we would like to see a little bit more cargo space in the new model.

2024 Audi Q5 Engines

Most likely, most of the current powertrain options will carry on. However, the latest reports suggest that they are about to get a 48V mild-hybrid system, which would have a positive effect on fuel economy and driving dynamics.

In any case, base models will continue with a 2.0-liter turbo-four. That engine currently puts out around 201 horsepower, while there is also a more powerful variant with 261 horsepower. Both units could get a slight power increase but, on the other hand, they should continue with a dual-clutch transmission.

We also count on the performance version SQ5. This unit currently features a 3.0-liter V6 that puts out around 350 horsepower and once again, we could see a slight power increase. Unlike the turbo-four, this engine comes in pair with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Finally, there’s a plug-in hybrid version. The current generation uses a system based on a turbo-four engine, with a  total output of 362 horsepower. The new generation will probably come with an upgraded or completely new hybrid system.
