Compact luxury crossovers have become the most popular premium segment on the market, and that’s why the expectations from the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC are pretty big. The new generation is on the way and it is expected to bring a lot of improvements, which will make it good enough to compete with rivals like BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Novelties are expected in every aspect of the car, but the powertrain department looks particularly interesting.
From what we know so far, most of the car will undergo evolutionary changes. However, big things will happen under the hood, where we expect to see a number of new, electrified powertrain options. Most likely, six-cylinder engines will be dropped from the offer and replaced with plug-in hybrid variants. Fortunately, the AMG’s V8 will remain in the offer.
We expect that the new generation will be revealed by the end of the year. Most likely, sales in North America will start in early 2022.
2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC Redesign
Without any doubt, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC will bring a lot of new things. However, most of the changes will be evolutionary. For example, the new model will continue to ride on the same modular platform. Still, this platform will undergo significant upgrades, and some of them will refer to the ability to accommodate new forms of electrified powertrains. Of course, revisions are expected in terms of the chassis and suspension. We presume that the updates will come in a similar fashion to the new C-Class, which means we may expect even nicer ride quality than before.
Styling and Interior Design
When it comes to styling, we definitely don’t expect to see any surprises. We count on the implementation of the brand’s latest design language, which is pretty much the same across the whole lineup. So, you may count on a very similar look to the GLE model, just in a smaller package. The overall shape and proportions will remain pretty similar to the current model.
On the inside, we count on the same approach as in the new C-Class. This would mean a high-end interior, full of excellent materials and excellent build quality. Furthermore, the new sedan is fully loaded with tech features, so we have no doubt that will be the case with the new 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC as well
As we already mentioned, the proportions should remain the same. Therefore, we count on a pretty similar amount of space in the new model, as well as similar numbers in terms of the cargo area. Of course, we have no doubt that the new 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC will come in two familiar body styles in the offer, as an SUV, and as a Coupe.
2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC Engines
One of the biggest changes for the next generation will be those under the hood. It looks like all powertrain options will get electrified. Of course, that will be the company’s EQ Boost mild hybrid system in the base version, but a plug-in hybrid should come as well.
Base models are expected to come with a familiar 2.0-liter turbo-four engine, which is good for about 255 horsepower and gets help from a small 20-hp electric motor. In other parts of the world, the new SUV will also come with a smaller 1.5-liter gasoline engine, as well as a 2.0-liter turbodiesel. All these engine options will come in a mild-hybrid setup.
On the other hand, the current six-cylinder engine will probably be replaced with a plug-in hybrid. The new system should be based on the same 2.0-liter turbo-four engine but in a combination with an electric motor that’s good for 127 hp and 325 Lb-Ft. A 25.4 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack providing a zero-emission range of 62 miles.
One of the best things to know about the new AMG-badged version is that it will continue with a V8 engine. It will use the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which a max output of 503 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The engine will come in pair with a 9-speed automatic transmission and such a combination will provide a 0-60 spring in just 3.7 seconds.
Besides plenty of power, this version will come with many other upgrades. This particularly refers to the chassis and suspension setup. You may count on AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, as well as on selectable drive modes. Of course, AWD will be standard. Naturally, we will also see a bunch of unique styling details that will emphasize the model’s high-performance character.
2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC Release Date and Price
We expect that the new 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC will have a premiere late in the year, while the sales should start in early 2022. When it comes to the price, base models should cost around 45.000 dollars. Key competitors are BMW X3, Audi Q5, Lexus NX etc.
