Big things will come from Mazda in the next few years. Among them, one of the special places will belong to the 2022 Mazda CX-50. This model will come next year and from what we know so far, it will be important for the company in many ways. It will be the first model to ride on the new RWD platform, which will make it a genuine premium car. For the first time, Mazda will offer a model that can give brands like BMW or Mercedes a run for their money.
The new platform will be beneficial in many ways. Besides the layout, it will also bring a couple of brand-new engine options, including the so-much-awaited inline-six. Also, it will use a brand-new automatic transmission, while big things are expected in terms of styling as well. Naturally, we expect further improvements to Mazda’s already impressive interiors.
According to the latest reports, the new crossover will debut sometime in the next year.
2022 Mazda CX-50 Redesign
When it comes to base design characteristics, the first thing you should know is that the 2022 Mazda CX-50 won’t have too many things in common with the popular CX-5 compact crossover. Other than the similar name, things will be significantly different.
Of course, the first key difference is the platform. Mazda has been developing the new RWD platform for years and this should be the first model to ride on it if we can trust the latest reports. This architecture will bring significant improvements in many ways. We are talking about a completely different layout, which should make the ride quality even better. Furthermore, this architecture will open room for new engine options, new transmission and many more things. We are also getting reports about electrification, which makes perfect sense, given the situation in the current market.
You probably wonder what kind of an SUV would be the new 2022 Mazda CX-50. Considering that the CX-5 is expected to remain in the offer, many believe that this one could come in a coupe-like form, which is a very popular thing these days. At this point, we can’t confirm that but we can say for sure that the new SUV will be compact in size. It will be designed to compete with models like BMW X3 and X4, no matter the final shape.
We have no doubt that the 2022 Mazda CX-50 will be a gorgeous SUV. Mazda has been making lovely designs for a very long period. So, we count on the latest iteration of the famous KODO design language. Naturally, we count on a lot of influence from the CX-30, as well as from the 2017 Vision concept.
Mazda makes excellent interiors and if we consider that the 2022 Mazda CX-50 is expected to go even more upscale, we presume that the new cabin would look even more impressive, with even more luxury features. However, we have no doubt that the Japanese manufacturer will stick with its recognizable philosophy, offering an interior design that is simple and super elegant – something similar to BMW is doing, just in a better way.
The overall functionality will largely depend on the final shape. If we are about to see a coupe crossover, we presume that the cargo area won’t be too big, while the second-row headroom might be compromised as well. On the other side, the front seats will certainly offer plenty of room and a high level of comfort. Mazda is known for offering an excellent driving position in terms of ergonomics, though rearward visibility has never been a strength of its models. We presume that the 2022 Mazda CX-50 would offer something similar.
2022 Mazda CX-50 Engines
One of the most interesting things about the new SUV will be the powertrain department. As we already mentioned, the new platform will feature an RWD layout and it will bring new engine options. The most interesting is definitely the new inline-six gasoline engine. Allegedly, this engine will be offered in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged variants. Some sources are even talking about the possibility to see a diesel option on some markets.
Another highly anticipated thing about the 2022 Mazda CX-50 is the new transmission. The outdated 6-speed automatic will finally be replaced with a new 8-speed unit.
Finally, we expect to see a hybrid version. From what we know so far, the current 2.5-liter SkyActive engine will serve as a basis. Of course, it will get help from a couple of electric motors. We expect a setup similar to those found in Toyota models, particularly the RAV4.
Despite the rumors, the legendary MazdaSpeed division won’t be revived.
2022 Mazda CX-50 Release Date and Price
It’s still early for a more precise date but from what we can hear, the new SUV will arrive already in the next year. When it comes to the price, it’s still early for estimations.
