2022 Mazda CX-5 Preview: Redesign, Release date, Hybrid, Price, Changes

Despite the spy shots, rendering photos and reports that suggest a full redesign for the next year, we are pretty sure that the new model won’t come so soon. Moreover, we know for sure that Mazda won’t be launching new models before the 2023 model year, which clearly indicates no significant updates for the 2022 Mazda CX-5. This will be a typical carryover model, with minor updates only. Those minor updates could come in the form of new standard features, new color options and similar things. Other than that, things should remain the same.

So, you may count on familiar characteristics from the next year’s model. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 will continue to be one of the best compact crossovers on the market, despite the age. This model looks great from the outside and even better from the inside. Furthermore, we really like its engaging handling and peppy optional engine. On the other side, the biggest complaint goes to the small cargo area.

Design-wise, the next year shouldn’t bring any particular change. The overall layout will certainly remain the same, based on Mazda’s well-known SkyActive technology. The current generation has been around since 2016 and it still looks pretty fresh in every aspect. We particularly like its chassis and suspension setup, which provide hatchback-like engaging handling, without sacrificing comfort too much.

When it comes to styling, there’s nothing you probably don’t know about this beautiful crossover. Like any other Mazda, it looks fantastic, with all those design solutions from Mazda’s contemporary design language. The next year won’t bring any particular change, so you may count on a familiar styling. Still, we may see a new color option in the offer, while we shouldn’t exclude the possibility to see some new visual package, new special edition or something like that.

Interior

We don’t expect to see interior changes either. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 should continue with the same cabin layout, which still has so many things to offer. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is the handsome dashboard design, while the whole cabin features pretty impressive materials. Most of them are soft to the touch, while fit and finish are at a pretty high level as well.

On the other hand, we can’t say that the CX-5 is the most practical model in its class. The front row is spacious and comes with pretty comfortable seats. The second row isn’t that generous with space and taller passengers may find it a little bit tight. The cargo area is also pretty small and you may count on no more than 31 cubic feet behind the second row, while folding down the back seats opens up about 60 cubic feet.

Features

Yearly updates usually bring a couple of novelties in this aspect but we are pretty sure that most of the things will remain the same as in the current model. The current model comes standard with goodies like a 10.25-inch touch-screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Mazda Connected Services, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a four-speaker stereo, and HD Radio. Additionally, you can get goodies like two rear USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, satellite radio, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, a moonroof, a universal garage door opener, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, and ambient interior lighting.

When it comes to safety, all models should come standard with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview camera, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Additionally, there should be options like a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Engines

Things under the hood definitely won’t change and the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will continue with two familiar powertrain options in the offer. Base models will continue with a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine, which puts out around 187 horsepower.

For those who look for more power, there is also a turbocharged version of this engine. This one puts out up to 250 horsepower with premium gasoline. It provides pretty impressive driving dynamics and turns this crossover into a pretty fun car to drive.

Both engines come in pair with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It does feel a little bit old-school but generally does a pretty decent job.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Release Date and Price

Since there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will hit the market sometime late in the year. Also, the price should remain pretty much the same, which would mean around 26.000 dollars for the base version. When it comes to the competition, some of the key players in this segment are models like Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester etc.
