By Despite that it’s been around since 2016, the current generation of Mazda’s mid-size crossover is still among class leaders. Simply, it still looks gorgeous and offers impressive ride quality. However, the Japanese manufacturer wants to step up and offers something even better, something that can compete with premium players in the segment. That’s why we are all eagerly waiting to see the all-new, next-generation 2024 Mazda CX-9. Some sources also suggest that the new model could be renamed to CX-90.
In any case, the new model is about to bring a lot of novelties. One of the first things that come to mind is a completely different layout. The new platform will come with an FR layout, with a longitudinally-mounted engine and RWD-biased drivetrain. That promises even better performances, while the new generation is also expected to go upscale in terms of interior design and overall luxury.
We expect to see the all-new 2024 Mazda CX-9 sometime in the second half of 2023.
2024 Mazda CX-9 Redesign
As we’ve just mentioned, a lot of novelties are expected with this redesign. First of all, there is the new platform. Unlike the current model that features FF/F4 layout, with a transversally-mounted engine, the new one will feature a longitudinally-mounted engine. This means that we are talking about an RWD platform, although all-wheel drive will probably be part of the standard equipment.
Such a setup promises an even better driving experience and if we consider that the current model is already the leader in this aspect among the mainstream competition, there is no doubt that the new model will be able to compete with premium rivals as well.

Exterior
Of course, we count on a completely new exterior design too. At this point, it’s still early for details but we presume that the new design language will draw some inspiration from the new CX-60. The new model will look more rugged but we don’t expect it will lose Mazda’s sleek appearance and clean lines, something that’s been the brand’s trademark for a long time.
In terms of exterior dimensions, details are still unavailable. On the other hand, rumors suggest a little bit longer wheelbase, which would definitely be beneficial in terms of passenger space. On the other hand, the overhangs will probably be shorter, which will make the new model even more attractive. This also means that the overall length probably won’t change much.
Interior
As we’ve just mentioned, exterior dimensions probably won’t change much. Therefore, we expect to see a similar amount of interior space. However, the longer wheelbase could bring some improvements in terms of legroom, though the third row will probably remain typically tight for a mid-size SUV. On the other hand, the first two rows will be spacious and comfortable.
We count on further improvements regarding cabin quality. The current model already looks pretty impressive in this aspect but the new generation should bring final improvements, which will finally put this model on par with much more expensive mid-size SUVs that wear premium badges. We are thinking of models like Acura MDX, Infiniti QX60 etc.
2024 Mazda CX-9 Engines
Under the hood, the 2024 Mazda CX-9 should bring big novelties too. From what we know so far, the current turbo-four will be replaced with the brand-new 3.0-liter inline-six gasoline engine. All versions of this engine will come with a turbocharger and it is expected that base CX-9 models will come equipped with a variant that puts out around 300 horsepower. Higher trim levels will probably come with a more powerful variant of this engine. Also, we presume that the new engine will come coupled with a 48V mild-hybrid system, which will have a positive impact both on performance and fuel economy.
Besides the new engine, we also count on a new transmission. The current 6-speed unit will be replaced with the new 8-speed automatic.
In some parts of the world, the new model is also expected with the new 3.3-liter turbodiesel, with a max output of around 280 horsepower.
2024 Mazda CX-9 Release Date and Price
We believe that the 2024 Mazda CX-9 could arrive already in the second half of 2023. Base models will probably go around 40.000 dollars.
