2022 Volvo XC90 Redesign, Release date, Interior, Hybrid, Colors

It looks like the second generation of Volvo’s mid-size crossover won’t have such a long lifespan, as was the case with the original model. The Swedish carmaker is already working on the next generation and it looks like it will hit the market in the next year, as the 2023 model. That clearly indicates that the 2022 Volvo XC90 will be the final model year of the current generation, which usually means a lack of any notable changes.

Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean bad. The current generation has been around since 2015 and it is still relevant on the market of luxury mid-size SUVs. It offers a smooth and comfortable ride, while we particularly like its luxurious interior. The inside of this SUV is also very spacious, whether it’s about passengers or cargo. Just like you would expect from a Volvo, the list of safety features is very long, while we also like its good fuel economy.

Since there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the company won’t rush with the launch and that the 2022 Volvo XC90 will hit the market sometime late in the year.

2022 Volvo XC90 Redesign

When it comes to base design characteristics, the 2022 Volvo XC90 won’t be much different compared to the initial model that arrived six years ago. The SUV is based on a familiar SPA platform and it offers a great driving experience. Of course, we are talking from the perspective of those who are looks for a comfortable ride. The suspension setup is soft and smooth. As a result, this model isn’t particularly fun to drive.

In terms of aesthetics, the best we could see for the next year are new color options. Other than that, things will remain the same, and that includes all the updates that came with the 2021 refresh. Some of the changes that happened are new front fascia, grille, wheel designs etc.

Interior

The cabin has always been one of the strongest points of this SUV. Of course, the 2022 Volvo XC90 won’t be any different. It’s really hard to find any bigger complaint in this cabin. It is spacious and offers excellent build quality. We also like the materials and the dashboard design, which is clean and elegant. Furthermore, the front seats are some of the best in the class, characterized by excellent comfort and support.

Passengers in the second row may also count on plenty of space and a high level of comfort. The third row is typically tight for the segment. When it comes to cargo volume, you may count on 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third row. Fold them down and you’ll get around 42 cubic feet, while the total volume with both the second and third row of seats down goes up to 85.7 cubic feet. These are some of the highest ratings in the class.

Features

We won’t exclude the possibility to see a couple of additions to the list of standard equipment but we have no doubt that most of the things will remain the same as in the current model. This means that all models will come standard with goodies like quad-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, a 10-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, two USB-C ports, wireless device charging, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. You can pay extra and get options like 14- or 19-speaker premium sound systems.

Typically for Volvo, the list of standard safety features is pretty impressive. It includes goodies like a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive LED headlights, road sign recognition, and driver drowsiness monitoring.

2022 Volvo XC90 Engines

The 2022 Volvo XC90 will continue with three familiar engine options in the offer. Base versions are called T5 and they use a 2.0-liter turbo-four with around 250 horsepower. The optional T6 uses the same turbo engine but combines it with a supercharger as well. As a result, you get a total power of 316 horsepower, which provides notably better acceleration and overall performance.

Finally, there is the T8 model, which uses the same engine as the T6 model but also adds an electric motor. This plug-in hybrid delivers a combined output of 400 horsepower. It is definitely fast, but rivals like Lexus RX 450h offer a much more refined hybrid powertrain, as well as a significantly better fuel economy.

All three units come coupled with 8-speed automatic transmission.

2022 Volvo XC90 Release Date and Price

Considering that there are no bigger changes to come, we presume that the 2022 Volvo XC90 will hit the market sometime late in the year. Base versions go around 50.000 dollars, while key competitors are models like Audi Q7, Mercedes Benz GLE etc.
