By Jeep’s smallest crossover has been around since 2015 and while there is a lot of talk about the next generation, the latest reports suggest that the current version should remain in production for another year or two. Allegedly, the new generation won’t come before 2023, which clearly indicates that the 2022 Jeep Renegade is going to be a typical carryover model. In other words, the best we could see are minor updates in terms of features, while a new color or two wouldn’t be a surprise either. Other than that, things are about to remain the same.
So, what we expect from the 2022 Jeep Renegade is to see a familiar layout, which still has some good things to offer. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is decent off-road capability, while we also like the on-road ride quality. Furthermore, the infotainment system is easy to use, while the exterior design still looks fresh and competitive. On the other side, the biggest complaint goes to the powertrain department, which is neither powerful nor efficient.
2022 Jeep Renegade Redesign
The current model has been around for a while and it hasn’t changed too much meanwhile. We are still talking about the same SUV that was launched in 2015, which rides on a familiar Small Wide 4×4 platform. Many parts are shared with models like Fiat 500X, but there is a lot of unique styling solutions as well. With 101.2 inches in wheelbase, it is among shorter models in the class, but that definitely has its advantages, especially when it comes to off-roading. Also, the ground clearance goes around 8.7 inches.
When it comes to the styling, we saw a mild facelift a few years ago, which has brought a couple of novelties, particularly at the front. Still, the overall styling is pretty similar to what we can see in earlier models. The general impression is pretty good. Despite the age, this model still looks quite appealing.
Interior
The inside of this crossover hasn’t changed too much since the initial launch. Therefore, it’s no wonder that most younger classmates look better from the inside. Still, the Renegade is far from looking bad. The overall quality is good, even though most of the cabin is trimmed with hard plastics. On the other hand, ergonomics aren’t ideal and somehow, the driving position should be better.
When it comes to the passenger space, this crossover is surprisingly roomy, thanks to its boxy shape. Both rows can accommodate adult passengers, despite the pretty short wheelbase. The cargo area also offers pretty decent numbers for the segment. You may count on about 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space with its rear seats upright and 50.8 cubic feet with those seats folded. That’s quite average for the segment.
Features
We don’t expect any bigger change in terms of standard and available equipment either. The current model comes standard with goodies like a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a USB port, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a six-speaker stereo, as well as with remote keyless entry, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Among available upgrades, you can find things like keyless entry, remote start, and a 120-volt power outlet, an 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation, HD Radio, a nine-speaker stereo, and an additional USB port.
The same thing is with safety features. All models should come standard with goodies like a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist. Additionally, there are options like front and rear parking sensors, hands-free park assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.
2022 Jeep Renegade Engines
Things under the hood will definitely remain the same. The 2022 Jeep Renegade will continue with a 2.4-liter inline-four as the base option. This engine puts out around 180 horsepower and comes in pair with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Also, there is a similarly powered 1.3-liter turbo-four, which offers notably better driving dynamics, thanks to more torque. It also comes in pair with a 9-speed automatic transmission, which isn’t the most refined gearbox on the market.
When it comes to fuel economy, the base engine returns around 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The optional turbo-four is slightly better and returns around 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Still, the ratings are below-average in both cases.
2022 Jeep Renegade Release Date and Price
We don’t believe that the 2022 Jeep Renegade could arrive before the last quarter of the year. Also, the price should remain pretty much the same as for the current model year, which starts at around 23.000 dollars. The competition in the segment is pretty tough. Some of the key rivals are models like Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30, Toyota C-HR, Honda HR-V etc.
