Nissan’s luxury division is coming back to the coupe crossover segment with the new 2022 Infiniti QX55. This is the latest iteration of the brand’s sleek design language, which comes in a form that’s becoming more and more popular these days. Designed to compete with models like Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X4, this compact crossover brings Infiniti’s vision of a sporty crossover that’s more about style than practicality.
The new model has a lot of things in common with the more conventional QX50. The mechanical aspect is nearly identical, so you may count on familiar design characteristics. On the other side, it is less practical but it looks better. The cabin design is largely the same, except for the rear headroom and cargo area, which are tighter in this case.
The new model already debuted in North America and it is available with a starting price of around 47.000 dollars.
2022 Infiniti QX55 Redesign
As we’ve just mentioned, the 2022 Infiniti QX55 is an all-new model in the company’s lineup. It comes as a coupe crossover and as we already mentioned, it is heavily based on the QX50. The two models share most of the parts. Moreover, even the dimensions are pretty much the same, as well as the aesthetics. The front end looks pretty much identical, just like most of the vehicles. On the other hand, the main difference is manifested in the rear end design, which comes with a sloping roof layout, which provides that coupe-like appearance.
As the two models feature the same mechanics, this means that the chassis and suspension setup is also the same. In other words, this crossover offers familiar design characteristics. The ride is rather on a soft side and despite the sporty look, the new QX55 isn’t particularly engaging when it comes to handling and driving dynamics in general.
On the inside, the 2022 Infiniti QX55 looks pretty familiar. The dashboard is pretty much the same as in the QX50, highlighted by a familiar dual screen setup. The overall quality is pretty impressive. The materials are really great, while the build quality is on a high level as well. On the other hand, the fact is that overall aesthetics aren’t the freshest thing in the automotive industry. Simply, German rivals look more modern from the inside.
Given the model’s overall layout, it’s obvious that practicality isn’t on a super-high level. The sloping roof definitely compromises the rear-seat headroom, so taller passengers may have trouble accommodating comfortably. On the other hand, the front seats are more than spacious and comfortable. Another obvious drawback of this design is the cargo area. You may count on about 26.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 54.1 cubic feet, which is below-average for the class. Still, that’s more compared to direct rivals – BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.
The list of standard equipment is more than decent in this model. It includes tech goodies like 8- and 7-inch touch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, four USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, satellite radio, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Base models also come standard with remote keyless entry, remote start, dual-zone climate control, moonroof etc. Additionally, you can get upgrades like tri-zone climate control, a navigation system and a 16-speaker stereo.
When it comes to safety, base models come equipped with goodies like rearview camera, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high-beam headlights. Among options, you can find a surround-view parking camera system, a head-up display, road sign recognition, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and the ProPilot Assist system.
2022 Infiniti QX55 Engine
Things under the hood are also pretty familiar. The 2022 Infiniti QX55 also features a 2.0-liter turbo-four, which offers a good balance between power and efficiency. It is good for about 268 horsepower, while the average fuel economy goes around 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. That’s above-average power for a turbo-four in the class, with average fuel economy.
The engine by itself is pretty good but we can’t say the same for transmission. This crossover uses a CVT gearbox, with has a lot of limitations, especially regarding performances. Also, it makes the engine pretty noisy at higher speeds.
2022 Infiniti QX55 Price
The base 2022 Infiniti QX55 starts at around 47.000 dollars, in a trim level called Luxe. The Essential is a mid-range option and starts at around 52.000 dollars. Finally, there is the Sensory trim, with a starting price of around 57.000 dollars.
