By Once upon a time, Ford was obsessed with making the toughest SUV ever and for that occasion, they picked the F-250 Super Duty as the basis. Eventually, the new SUV came as the Ford Excursion and it was in production between 1999 and 2006. Of course, the model was huge and extremely capable. However, the interest in this model started to decrease with the rise of fuel prices and with the first signs of the economic crisis, which will have its peak a few years later. These days, we can hear rumors that the Blue Oval Company is considering bringing back this model, which would come as the 2022 Ford Excursion.
At this point, everything is just a rumor. Therefore, you should remain reserved, while we will be very careful with predictions and speculations. In any case, we presume that Ford Engineers would stick to the same design philosophy and that they would use the same approach as in the original model. Allegedly, this SUV could hit the market already in the next year.
2022 Ford Excursion Redesign
Of course, we should start with the most basic design characteristics. So, one of the first things that come to mind is the platform. We have no doubt that the F-250 would serve as the basis once again. The current generation of this Super Duty truck has been around since 2016 and if we consider that the recent redesign of the F-150 has brought only evolutionary changes, it’s pretty obvious that Blue Oval engineers won’t experiment too much in this aspect.
What we are about to see is the same chassis and body, which combine lightweight materials like aluminum and HSS. Compared to the Expedition, we presume that one of the biggest differences will be the suspension setup. Instead of the independent rear suspension, we will see a more rigid setup, similar to the F-250. Still, some reports also speculate about the possibility to see some aid components.
Exterior
Another big difference compared to the Expedition will be the size. Since 2006, Ford’s full-size SUV has grown a lot. Also, the new Suburban measures more than 134 inches in wheelbase, which clearly indicates that the new 2022 Ford Excursion will have to grow a little in order to remain exclusive. Some rough predictions suggest around 140 inches in wheelbase.
When it comes to the styling, we have no doubt that Ford designers would tend to accentuate the model’s Super Duty character. Therefore, we expect that the front end will look rugged and that it will take a lot of inspiration from the pickup sibling. Still, we count on a lot of exclusive details in this area as well. The rest of the body will come in a typical Excursion fashion, which means a long and square body, with lots of muscles.
Interior
So far, Ford hasn’t been particularly interested in delivering too luxurious vehicles. Instead, models like Expedition rather feature simple layouts, which don’t look particularly appealing. On the other side, these cabins are durable and perfectly functional, in a classic pickup fashion. Therefore we count on the same approach in the 2022 Ford Excursion.
In terms of the dashboard, this means a truckish design, similar to the F-250. Of course, we are talking about the overall shape. On the other side, materials and build quality would certainly be on a higher level.
Still, the most prominent thing about this cabin would be the amount of space. With such an impressive wheelbase, we have no doubt that all three rows of seats would be extremely spacious. The same thing goes for the cargo area, which could easily feature 150 cubic feet of the total cargo volume.
2022 Ford Excursion Engines
Under the hood, we expect no surprises. Therefore, base versions would probably come with a good-old 6.2-liter V8, which puts out around 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Of course, a new 7.3-liter V8 Godzilla is expected too. This engine has been introduced recently and it features a max output of 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque.
Many believe that Ford could also offer a diesel version of the SUV. In that case, we would see a recently-updated 6.7-liter V8 turbodiesel, which now puts out 475 horsepower and 1.050 pound-feet of torque. It would be really interesting to see an SUV with such a massive torque.
All three engines would come in pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
2022 Ford Excursion Release Date and Price
Many sources suggest that the 2022 Ford Excursion could arrive already in the next year. However, you should take this with a big reserve, considering that the officials are quiet about this comeback. We believe that the actual chances to see this comeback are minimal. Still, if it arrives one day, we presume that the starting price would go somewhere around 60-65.000 dollars.
