The world of two-row mid-size crossovers isn’t that big but there is definitely some tough competition between models like Honda Passport, Ford Edge, Chevy Blazer etc. Among them, the Santa Fe stands out as a cheaper alternative, a model that offers an impressive amount of quality for the money. The last year’s refresh has brought a lot of novelties, in all aspects. It was a massive facelift, just two years after the launch, but that doesn’t mean that Korean engineers have finished their work. Another big novelty is coming for the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe, in the form of a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

On the other side, the rest of the range is about to carry on in the same way. You may count on three familiar powertrain options, including the recently added hybrid. Also, this crossover offers a pretty impressive list of standard and available features, while we also like the nice-looking interior

The new PHEV version will hit the market this summer, while other variants should arrive later in the year.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Gets Plug-In Hybrid Version

Without any doubt, this will be the biggest novelty for the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe. The Korean manufacturer will use a relatively familiar system, the same one that’s offered in Sorento. It is similar to the standard hybrid model, as it’s also based on a 1.6-liter turbo-four engine. However, it uses a bigger and more powerful electric motor, with around 90 horsepower, so the total output goes up to 260 horses. That’s a quite respectable amount of power that promises a lot in terms of performances.

Besides solid acceleration, this version will also offer decent autonomy. With a 12.4-kWh battery pack, you may count on about 30 miles of the all-electric range. When it comes to fuel economy, the company claims 33 mpg combined.

Other than the new plug-hybrid version, we don’t expect that too many things will change for the next year. The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe will carry on in the same way, featuring all the changes that came with the recent facelift. Just a couple of years after the launch, this crossover received a massive facelift. There is a completely new face, which includes a new grille, new headlights, bumper etc. All these parts are designed in a quite futuristic manner and make this crossover look more exclusive than before.

This refresh has also brought novelties in terms of mechanics, in the form of the new N3 architecture. Compared to the predecessor, the new version offers a little bit more engaging handling but the overall driving experience is quite familiar to the previous version. Naturally, we expect that the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe will continue in the same way.

The inside of this crossover is definitely one of its strongest points, especially after the recent update. The new model comes with a dashboard that includes lots of new things, starting from a completely new center console, which looks more massive, features nicer materials and comes with new controls. You can also notice a new tablet-like infotainment screen, with 8 inches in base models and 10.4 in higher trim levels. Also, there is a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Besides solid build quality, this crossover offers a decent amount of passenger space. Both rows have enough room to accommodate adults with ease. On the other say, we can’t say the same for the cargo area. You get 35.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 71.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, which is way below-average for the class.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Engines

Other than the new plug-in hybrid version, things under the hood will remain the same. Therefore, you may count on three more powertrain options. Base models use a good-old 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated inline-four, which is good for about 191 horsepower, which seems quite okay for daily commuting. On the other side, more ambitious drivers should definitely consider the optional turbo-four, which puts out around 277 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. This engine provides pretty impressive driving dynamics and the best thing is that it isn’t significantly thirstier than the base unit.

Finally, there is the hybrid version. It uses a 1.6-liter turbo-four engine, in a combination with a 60-hp electric motor. The total output goes around 225 horsepower, which is more than enough for a convenient ride. This is also the most efficient version of Santa Fe you can get. It returns around 34 miles per gallon in a combined ride.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Release Date and Price

As we already mentioned, the new 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe plug-in hybrid will arrive in summer. On the other side, other models should come in a typical time of year, sometime in the last quarter. The current model starts around 28.200 dollars and we don’t expect to see a bigger increase for the next year. The new PHEV version should start at around 35.000 dollars.
