2024 Ford Explorer Is Getting Mid-Cycle Refresh

0

The current generation of Ford’s well-known mid-size SUV has been around since 2020 and although it’s still pretty fresh in most aspects, it looks like it is about to receive a mid-cycle refresh. Namely, the competition is tougher than ever and Explorer’s sales numbers are currently in decline, in favor of key rivals – Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota Highlander. The refreshed model is expected to arrive sometime in the second half of 2023, as the 2024 Ford Explorer.

At this point, the details about this refresh are still unavailable. Still, we may presume that the focus will be on aesthetics. We may see new styling, but also some changes on the inside. There’s a chance to see some features from the Chinese version as well. On the other hand, we don’t expect to see bigger changes under the hood. The company works on the all-electric Explorer, but that model won’t have many things in common with the current version.

2024 Ford Explorer Design

As we’ve just mentioned, the 2024 Ford Explorer is about to receive a refresh, if we can trust the latest reports. At this point, we don’t know much but we presume that the focus will be aesthetics. On the other hand, the mechanical aspect of the vehicle should remain the same, based on the familiar CD6 platform, which underpins the Lincoln Aviator as well.

In terms of aesthetics, we might see some revisions at the front, things like new headlights, grille, bumper etc. Some inspiration may be taken from the Chinese-market Explorer, though the two models won’t necessarily look the same.

The off-road-oriented Timberline trim will also get some updates, though we don’t expect bigger changes regarding off-road features. So, don’t expect to see anything more rugged than upgraded shock absorbers, limited-slip differentials and similar things.

Interior

The same thing is with interior design. We presume that most of the cabin will remain the same, though that a couple of novelties will come. This particularly refers to the dashboard design, which may come with a new infotainment screen. Does this mean that we are about to see that monumental 27-inch screen, or something a little bit more modest, it’s hard to say at this point. In any case, we presume there could be upgrades in materials, color schemes, etc.

Of course, the overall cabin layout will remain the same, which means that you may count on the same seating configuration and the same amount of passenger space. This SUV comes standard with three rows of seats and even the third row is quite functional and comfortable. The front seats offer plenty of space and good driving position, while the second row is also very generous with space and accommodates three adults with ease.

The cargo area offers 18.2 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 47.9 cubic feet behind the second, and 87.8 cubic feet of the overall cargo space, which is above average for the class.

Features

This update should also bring some novelties to the list of standard equipment. We already talked about the new infotainment screen, and we also presume that some options could become part of the standard equipment. For reference, the current model comes standard with goodies like tri-zone climate control, push-button start, an 8-inch touch screen, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a six-speaker sound system, satellite radio, two USB ports, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.

The possible additions to the list of standard equipment are currently on the list of options. Some of the highlights are goodies like proximity keyless entry, a twin-panel moonroof, a 10.1-inch touch screen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12- or 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, HD Radio, two second-row USB ports, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

2024 Ford Explorer Engines

As we already mentioned, changes under the hood are not expected. We are about to see a familiar lineup, which starts with a 2.3-liter turbo-four that puts out around 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. That’s plenty enough for good driving dynamics and a proper choice for most drivers. For those who look for something peppier, there is a 3.0-liter V6, which features a max output of 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque.

Both engines are coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which feels smooth and refined. When it comes to fuel economy, the base turbo-four returns around 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which is great for the class. The V6 offers typical ratings for the segment, around 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

2024 Ford Explorer Release Date and Price

We expect that the updated 2024 Ford Explorer could arrive sometime in the second half of the next year, with a starting price of 35.000 dollars.
