By We’ve been hearing a lot about Volvo’s new crossover, which is about to replace the current XC90 model and come with an all-electric powertrain. However, that model won’t come before 2023, which clearly indicates that the current generation will remain in production for some more time. The 2023 Volvo XC90 will be a typical carryover model and we don’t expect to see any significant change, though there’s always a chance to see some tweaks regarding the standard and available features.
You may count on a familiar design, which still had a lot of good things to offer, despite the age. This crossover offers one of the nicest cabins in the class, which is also very spacious and practical. Traditionally, this model offers some pretty impressive safety scores, while the list of standard and available tech goodies is also pretty long. Finally, the engine lineup includes some pretty capable powertrain options.
As there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the 2023 Volvo XC90 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year.
2023 Volvo XC90 Design
The current generation has been around for a pretty long time, given today’s industry standards. It was introduced back in 2014 and it rides on the company’s first version of the SPA platform. As a result, it feels a little bit less comfortable compared to rivals, especially higher trim levels that come with bigger wheels. At the same time, the level of athleticism isn’t particularly impressive either.
Still, things are far from bad and the XC90 offers a quite pleasant ride quality. When it comes to the styling, not many things have changed since the initial launch but that’s not an issue at all. Simply, this SUV features a pretty classic design, which is aging very well. The next year won’t bring changes, though we could see minor updates, such as new color options.
Interior
The same thing goes for interior design. We don’t expect changes but that won’t be an issue at all. Despite the age, this mid-size crossover features one of the nicest cabins in the class. The build quality is great, and the materials are impressive. All this come packed in a design that’s all about classic aesthetical solutions, which make the cabin look pretty fresh, eight years after the launch.
The cabin looks great and also offers a great level of comfort. The front seats are soft and supportive, some of the best in the class. Furthermore, the second row also accommodates adults with ease. On the other hand, the third row is typical for the segment, which means it can be quite useful for kids on not-too-tall adults.
The cargo area offers around 15.8 cubic feet of space behind the third-row seats, 41.8 cubic feet with these seats folded, and 85.7 of the total cargo volume. Those are impressive ratings for the class, pretty much on par with mainstream mid-size crossovers like Toyota Highlander or Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Features
Novelties in this aspect are always possible but we don’t believe that too many new things could come. Most of the things should remain the same, which means that base models should come with goodies like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, wireless device charging, satellite radio, a 10-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, USB ports, quad-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, and a panoramic moonroof. The list of available features should include 14- and 19-speaker premium audio systems, rear sunshades and ambient lighting.
When it comes to safety features, base models will come standard with a rearview camera, parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, traffic-sign recognition, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control etc.
2023 Volvo XC90 Engines
The 2023 Volvo XC90 should carry one with familiar engine options. So, the base version would continue with a 2.0-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 250 horsepower. For those who are looking for something peppier, the same engine is available with the additional supercharger. As a result, the max output goes up to 316 horsepower.
Finally, there is a plug-in hybrid version, known as the T8, which combines this engine with an electric motor, for a combined output of 400 horses. This system includes an 11.6-kWh battery pack, which ensures 18 miles of the all-electric range.
All three powertrains come coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission from Aisin, which does a pretty good job too.
2023 Volvo XC90 Release Date and Price
Since there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the 2023 Volvo XC90 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year. The starting price should go around 50.000 dollars. Key competitors will be models like Audi Q7, BMW X5, Acura MDX etc.
