2022 Volvo XC40 Preview: Release date, Colors, Price, Changes, Hybrid

Although the officials are still quiet, we are pretty sure that the next year’s XC40 will come without more important changes. The company’s smallest crossover has been around for a while and after the last year’s update, which has brought an all-electric version, we are pretty sure that the 2022 Volvo XC40 will be a typical carryover model. We count on the same overall design, while the only possible updates are those regarding the new standard and available equipment.

You may count on a small but capable crossover, which has a lot of good things to offers. We like its interior design, as well as the fact that both rows of seats accommodate adults with ease. Furthermore, the list of standard equipment is pretty long, while the engine lineup includes several pretty capable engine options, including the recently introduced all-electric version.

As there are no significant changes to come, we are pretty sure that the 2022 Volvo XC40 will hit the market sometime late in the year.

2022 Volvo XC40 Design

The current generation of this small crossover has been around since 2017 but it still feels pretty fresh in every aspect. When it comes to base design characteristics, this crossover is built over the CMA platform, which allows all kinds of implementations of new technologies, including the recently introduced all-electric version.

The styling follows the brand’s contemporary design language and we don’t expect that the 2022 Volvo XC40 could bring any bigger changes. Still, there is always room for minor updates like new color options and similar things.

When it comes to the suspension setup and ride quality, the XC40 is on the soft side. It is very comfortable to drive but that also means you won’t get too engaging handling from it. The steering isn’t particularly precise, while there is also a little bit of body lean in corners.

Interior

The inside of this crossover is definitely one of its strongest points. We particularly like the overall quality, which is pretty impressive for this segment. Most of the cabin features high-end materials, which look great in a combination with a clean, simplistic design. There may be just a few areas in lower sections with hard plastics. The rest looks fantastic.

Besides good overall quality, this cabin also offers a decent amount of space. Although we are talking about a subcompact crossover, it accommodates adults in both rows with ease. The front seats are also massive and supportive. The driving position is also pretty good, whether it’s about ergonomics or outward visibility.

The only part of the interior that won’t impress you is the cargo space. You may count on about 20.7 cubic feet behind the second row and 47.2 cubic feet behind the first row of seats. Those are pretty modest numbers, even for this class of crossovers.

Features

We don’t believe that the 2022 Volvo XC40 could bring any more notable changes regarding the standard and available equipment. Moreover, things should be pretty much the same as in the current model, which comes standard with goodies like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, a 9-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, multiple USB ports, satellite radio, HD Radio, eight-speaker premium stereo etc. Among options, you can find goodies like wireless device charging, navigation, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium stereo, dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, universal garage door opener etc.

When it comes to safety, the current model comes standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, oncoming collision mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive LED headlights, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors etc. Additionally, you can get upgrades like adaptive cruise control, the Pilot Assist advanced driver assistance system, a surround-view parking camera system, front parking sensors, and automatic parking assist.

2022 Volvo XC40 Engines

Things under the hood definitely won’t change. So, base versions will continue with a 2.0-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 187 horsepower. While that’s more than enough to satisfy most drivers, there is also a more powerful version of the same engine, which features a max output of 250 horsepower and offers notably better driving dynamics. Both engines come in pair with 8-speed automatic transmission.

Of course, you may also count on the recently introduced all-electric version, which features a dual-motor setup, with a total output of 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to provide 0-60 acceleration in less than five seconds. Also, this version offers a max range of more than 200 miles.

2022 Volvo XC40 Release Date and Price

We expect that the 2022 Volvo XC40 will come sometime in the last quarter of the year. When it comes to the price, base models should go around 34.000 dollars. Models like BMW X1 and Audi Q3 are some of the key competitors.
