By We are living in the world of crossovers, where just a few genuine SUVs have left. However, things are different in parts of the world like Australia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and South America. In these parts of the rules, genuine body-on-frame SUVs still rule and among several models in the offer, you can also find Pajero Sport. This is Mitsubishi’s player in the segment, which offers the uncompromised capability and mixes it with a pretty high dose of refinement. The current generation has been around since 2015 and it was updated for the 2020 model year. Therefore, we are pretty sure that the 2022 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will come without more important changes.
You may count on the same overall design. This is a pretty tough SUV, which offers excellent off-road performance and plenty of utility potential. At the same time, this is a great family hauler, which offers plenty of interior space, solid cargo area and a pretty decent level of comfort. Also, you may count on a decent amount of tech features.
Since 2022 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is about to come without more important changes, we presume it will hit the market sometime late in the year.
2022 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Redesign
As we’ve just mentioned, no bigger changes are expected for the next year and the 2022 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will continue in the same way. The current generation has been around since 2015 and it is one of the rare SUVs that still rides on a good-old BoF chassis. It is a pretty capable SUV, which borrows most of its parts from the Triton/L200 pickup truck.
Naturally, a big part of Pajero Sport goes to off-road performance. This SUV features a full-time 4WD and a great thing is that it comes with a locking center differential. In certain versions, you can even lock the rear differential. Besides selectable drive modes, you can also choose between different traction modes, to deal with all kinds of loose surfaces. A hill-descent control is also part of the standard equipment.
Exterior Design
When it comes to the exterior design, the essentials are the same as in the initial 2015 model. The mechanics are mostly the same, as well as proportions. This SUV is 190 inches long and measures more than 110 inches in wheelbase, which makes it a proper mid-size SUV. Styling-wise, we saw a facelift a few years ago. This update has brought a couple of interesting novelties, especially at the front. The 2020 model year was adapted to the brand’s latest design language, which includes an even sharper appearance than before.
We don’t believe that the 2022 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport could bring any more important change. On the other hand, smaller updates like new color options are always possible.
Interior
The 2020 update has also brought a couple of interior updates. This particularly refers to the dashboard, which received a couple of upgrades. The first thing that comes to mind is a bigger 8-inch touchscreen, as well as an updated infotainment system. Furthermore, we saw a new 8-inch digital instrument screen, while Android Auto and Apple CarPlay have become part of the standard equipment.
The interior by itself looks good. Of course, it’s not as fancy as those found in crossover rivals, but it’s really hard to find any bigger complaint regarding design and quality. Also, materials are mostly hard to touch but they promise years of exploitation.
Standard models come with five seats but if we consider more than 110 inches in wheelbase, it’s no wonder that the third row is also available.
2022 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Engines
This SUV is available in three powertrain variants. In most cases, it uses a well-known 2.4-liter turbodiesel, the same one that powers the L200. This engine puts out around 180 horsepower (133kW) and it comes in pair with an 8-speed automatic transmission from Aisin. The max towing capacity goes around 3.1 tons.
In certain markets, you can even get a version with an older-generation 2.5-liter diesel with 136 horsepower. Furthermore, versions in the Middle East also come with a good-old 3.0-liter V6, which puts out 220 horsepower. Both engines come in pair with an older-generation 5-speed automatic, though there is a chance to get a manual gearbox in certain parts of the world.
2022 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Release Date and Competition
Considering that bigger changes probably won’t happen, we presume that the 2022 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport will hit the market sometime late in the year. Of course, the exact date may vary from market to market. When it comes to the competition, there are few more BoF SUVs left on the market. Some of them are models like Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest etc.
This model is also available in the UK, as Mitsubishi Shogun Sport, and it is also available in a commercial variant, without second and third rows of seats.
