The Japanese carmaker has big plans for the future and among them, you can find the expansion of the current lineup as well. One of the first new models that could come is the 2022 Mazda CX-7. At this point, we are still waiting for the official confirmation, but many car experts claim this as a certain thing. Obviously, this is the nameplate that’s currently missing in Mazda’s nomenclature and when we look at the current lineup, it’s also relatively easy to predict how big the new SUV will be.

One of the interesting things that rumors say about this model is that it will be reserved for North American customers only. Obviously, it will be smaller than the current CX-9 but the difference could actually be minimal, as the Japanese manufacturer has big plans for its flagship model, which should become significantly more premium with the next generation. In any case, rumors say that we could see the new CX-7 already in the next year.

2022 Mazda CX-7 Redesign

The 2022 Mazda CX-7 should be interesting in so many reasons, including base design characteristics. We expect that this model won’t be based on the company’s well-known SkyActive technology, but rather on Toyota’s TNGA platform.

No, this isn’t a mistake. The companies will have a lot of joint ventures in the future, and this should be one of the first outcomes of this cooperation. After, the two companies are building a new plant, where the new CX-7 will be produced. Moreover, the new crossover will have a Toyota-badged sibling and the two models should feature not just the platform, but the powertrain and most of the mechanics as well.

This cooperation will be highly beneficial in many ways, not just for the two companies, but for buyers as well. As we can all see, Mazda is making huge steps in becoming a genuine premium brand. One of the biggest breakthroughs will be the new platform. It will underprint the next-generation Mazda 6 and CX-9 models, which will feature RWD layout, inline-six engines and many other things that will certainly increase the price of Mazda products. On the other side, the 2022 Mazda CX-7 will use mostly Toyota’s technology and remain affordable and accessible to traditional Mazda lovers who aren’t particularly impressed with inevitable price increases.

Exterior

Therefore, the 2022 Mazda CX-7 could be a real savior, especially for those who need a spacious and practical SUV but don’t want to pay a premium price. That’s one of the indicators about the CX-7’s size and exterior design in general. The other, quite obvious indicator is that both Toyota and Mazda are missing a two-row mid-size crossover and that’s exactly what this model and its Toyota counterparts are about to be.

While mechanics and size will be shared between the two upcoming models, we have no doubt that the styling will be notably different. We presume that the 2022 Mazda CX-7 will be adapted to the brand’s latest design language, presented with the new Mazda 3 and CX-30 models. On the other side, Toyota’s model should go in a completely different way, aesthetically.

Interior

When it comes to interior design, it’s still early for any more detailed prediction. At this point, we can only speculate about general things. One of the first things that come to mind is the interior space. This model should be a typical 2-row mid-size crossover. It would compete with models like Honda Passport, Nissan Murano, Ford Edge etc. Therefore, we count on a similar amount of passenger room, which would mean two spacious rows of seats that accommodate adults with ease. The cargo area should also offer a decent amount of space. We expect around 35-40 cubic feet behind the second row.

The dashboard design should be quite similar to what we can see in other Mazda models. This means a simplistic but extremely stylish layout, with loads of high-quality, premium-grade materials. We count on a full load of tech features and advanced safety systems.

2022 Mazda CX-7 Engines

This could be one of the more interesting aspects of the 2022 Mazda CX-7. As it is about to ride on Toyota’s platform, the first thing that comes to mind is hybridization. Mazda currently doesn’t have such powertrain options in the offer. So, we wouldn’t be surprised if we see Toyota’s well-known system under the hood of this crossover. Of course, we are talking about the system that powers models like RAV4, Highlander and Camry. It is based on a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and offers impressive fuel economy.

A standard gasoline option should be in the offer too. We presume that could be Mazda’s well-known 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, in both turbo and naturally-aspirated iterations.

2022 Mazda CX-7 Release Date

At this point, the officials are still quiet about the 2022 Mazda CX-7. On the other side, the number of unofficial reports is pretty big and all of them suggest that we could see this crossover already in the next year.
