2022 GMC Terrain AT4, Denali, Release date, Interior, Colors

We’ve been waiting for a little bit more than we expected, and the 2022 GMC Terrain is finally here. The updated version of the compact crossover was originally planned for the 2021 model year, but GM decided to move it for the next year, due to the Coronavirus outbreak. The new model brings a lot of interesting novelties. Of course, the focus of this update was put on the styling and it looks like GMC designers have done a fantastic job. Furthermore, there is the new AT4 model, which emphasizes off-road capabilities.

On the other side, the overall design remains the same. So, despite the updates, we are still talking about the same vehicle, which definitely has some pretty good things to offer, but also remains stuck with a couple of unforgivable drawbacks. We expect to see the new model already this summer, while the range-topping Denali trim will arrive a little bit later.

2022 GMC Terrain Refresh

This refresh has brought a lot of interesting novelties. Still, most of the changes that have been made are in terms of styling. Compared to the pre-facelifted version, the new model looks way better. There is a completely new front end, which takes inspiration from GMC trucks and looks much bolder than before. The headlights still have that “boomerang” shape but look more angular. Also, the grille is more massive and comes with a new pattern. Of course, the bumper has been re-shaped as well.

On the other side, the mechanical aspect of the vehicle remains pretty much the same. This is the same model that was introduced in 2018, which rides on a familiar E2 platform, just like Chevy Equinox. The SUV rides smoothly and it is quite comfortable. On the other side, the handling isn’t particularly engaging and we can say that you won’t have too much fun while driving the new 2022 GMC Terrain.

Interior

Unlike the exterior, the inside of this SUV has remained pretty much the same. The dashboard design remains the same, while the only notable updates are new upholstery and the addition of wireless smartphone integration. Other than that, things are pretty much the same, which means that you may count on not particularly great overall quality. Most surfaces still feature hard plastics, while leaves this SUV behind most rivals.

On the other side, we can’t complain about the passenger space. Both rows are generous with passenger room and accommodate adults with ease. The driving position is good, as well as the visibility, though the front seats could use more support.

When it comes to the cargo area, you may count on about 29.6 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 63.3 cubic feet. While that’s not terrible, models like Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester offer way more.

2022 GMC Terrain AT4

One of the biggest novelties for the 2022 GMC Terrain is that this crossover comes with the AT4 version in the offer for the first time. If you’re familiar with AT4 variants of other GMC models, you know that we are talking about an off-road version of the SUV. Still, keep in mind that off-road hardware isn’t as impressive as in some bigger models. You get things like standard AWD, a front skid plate etc.

Besides mechanical upgrades, you may also count on a couple of exclusive styling details. The design approach is similar to other AT4 models, so you may count on things like unique wheels, a black chrome grille, black wheel arches, a couple of badges etc.

2022 GMC Terrain Engine

Things about the engine are still unclear. As you may know, GMC discontinued the optional 2.0-liter turbo-four last year but many believe that this unit could come back with this facelift. The fact is that the current model definitely needs a more powerful variant. Base models use a small 1.5-liter engine, which delivers around 170 horsepower. While it seems okay for daily commuting, we believe that most buyers would rather pick something more powerful.

If we presume that the bigger 2.0-liter turbo-four will come back, we have no doubt we would see its new version with around 230 horsepower. It’s less powerful than the previous variant but the company claims higher mpg ratings and more refinement. Speaking of the fuel economy, the base engine returns around 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, which is quite decent for the class.

Both engines use a 9-speed automatic transmission. While it generally works okay, many complain about its hesitation with downshifts.

As we already mentioned, the 2022 GMC Terrain will hit the market in the summer. At this point, we don’t have details about the price, but the latest reports suggest that base models will go around 28.000 dollars. The new AT4 should cost around 37.000 dollars.
