Bringing back familiar nameplates from the past is a good way to get more buyers interested, even when we talk about commercial vehicles. Therefore, it’s no wonder that the Blue Oval company is bringing back the Courier. After a relatively short break, we will see this model on the roads once again this time as the 2022 Ford Courier.
The history of the nameplate started decades ago. The first model with this name came way back in the ‘50s and the interesting thing is that even then, this nameplate was planned for a commercial vehicle. However, the initial model wasn’t a pickup, but rather a station wagon. The pickup era started in the ‘70s, with joint ventures with Mazda. At the time, this was pretty much a re-badged version of the well-known B series pickup from Japan and that state remained until the ‘90s. In the next era, the Courier moved its focus to Europe, where we saw a tiny pickup, based on the legendary Fiesta subcompact hatchback. The last time we saw such a layout was in the early 2010s, in Brazil and Mexico.
The all-new 2022 Ford Courier is expected to arrive this or next year, and we presume it will be primarily offered in the developing markets.
2022 Ford Courier Redesign
As we’ve just mentioned, the 2022 Ford Courier was already spotted testing. The mule still wears a heavy camouflage, so it’s hard to talk about details, especially in terms of the styling. On the other side, we’ve heard some pretty interesting things about the mechanics.
It looks like the new model will get notably bigger. Instead of a Fiesta-based design, the 2022 Ford Courier will rather share parts with Focus. The popular compact hatchback was redesigned a few years ago and it is still more than fresh to serve as a basis for this pickup. Of course, the focus will be on mechanics and the two models should share platform, engines etc.
Besides bigger dimensions, the 2022 Ford Courier will also bring a new styling. Even though the test model is still under a heavy cover, we can hear a lot of stories that the new pickup could feature a pretty unique design. The rumors say it definitely won’t borrow aesthetical solutions from the Focus. Instead, it would rather come with its own identity.
What this means exactly, it’s hard to tell. Still, we may presume it could come with a slightly bolder styling, which takes inspiration from BoF pickup trucks like Ranger and F-150. This particularly refers to the front end, which would adopt similar headlights, grille etc. More details will be known after the test model takes off the camo.
On the other side, we don’t expect that the cabin would look that exclusive. Instead, the dashboard would look largely the same as in Focus. That’s not a bad thing at all, considering that this dash looks good. Also, it offers decent quality and comes with loads of tech features. Still, we presume that Ford management would want to keep this pickup affordable, which means that things could be toned down for a bit. In practice, this would mean more hard plastics and less soft-touch surfaces, as well as fewer tech goodies.
In terms of the cab style, we presume that the single cab would be the only version on the offer. This means that the 2022 Ford Courier would be available with a single row of seats only, along with a decently-sized cargo bed. On the other side, some sources suggest that versions with two rows of seats could be offered as well. Finally, we wouldn’t be surprised if we see a van body style in the offer as well.
2022 Ford Courier Engines
In this case, things are relatively easy to predict. Considering the tight connection with Focus, we may expect to see similar engine options in the offer as well. This would include a naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine as well, which puts out around 123 horsepower. Of course, turbocharged versions of this engine are also expected. Two output variants are available, with 150 and 180 horsepower. On the other side, a 250-hp turbo-four sounds a little bit too ambitious to us.
As we are talking about a model that is primarily a commercial vehicle, we should consider a diesel version as well, especially if the 2022 Ford Courier is about to be offered in Europe. If that happens, we presume that a 1.5-liter turbodiesel would be on the offer as well. This engine puts out around 120 horsepower.
2022 Ford Courier Release Date and Price
If we can trust the latest reports, the 2022 Ford Courier could arrive either in the last quarter of this year or in early 2022. We presume that South America will be the primary market and there, base models would probably go around 20.000 dollars. More details should come soon.
