BMW’s entry-level crossover hasn’t been redesigned for nearly six years and despite it is still one of the best models in the class, it won’t get any younger. That’s why Bavarian engineers are working on a completely new model, which will hit the market as the 2022 BMW X1. This will be the third generation of the small crossover, which offers a nice package of luxury, style and performance. The testing model has already been spotted on the road and despite the heavy camouflage, we can see some of the styling bits of the new model.

What’s important to know about this redesign is that it will rather be an evolution of the outgoing model. We won’t see too many radical changes, whether it’s about styling or mechanics. Still, that doesn’t mean that the new model won’t come with notable improvements in various aspects. We count on even better ride quality, a more luxurious cabin and a plethora of other improvements. The 2022 BMW X1 should arrive by the end of the year.

2022 BMW X1 Redesign

As we’ve just mentioned, the new model shouldn’t bring too many radical changes. Instead, it will be an evolution of the current model. First of all, the platform setup will remain the same. We are talking about a familiar UKL2 platform, which underprints BMW’s entry-level vehicles, as well as a range of Mini models.

Of course, the architecture will receive significant updates, especially in terms of suspension geometry. Such changes will improve the ride quality, though we have to say that the current model already offers one of the best driving experiences in the segment. Interestingly, the test mule doesn’t look bigger than the outgoing model, so the wheelbase could easily remain the same. The current model measures 105.1 inches between the axles, while the LWB version is available in some markets as well.

Styling

While the mechanical aspect of the new 2022 BMW X1 will be about more or less fine tunings, the visual aspect will still bring more serious updates. The testing model has already been spotted and despite it still wears a complete camouflage, we can see most of the styling. Of course, BMW fans are most interested in the front end and from what we can see, the new model won’t feature that monstrous grill design we can find in M3 and M4 models. Instead, things will be more similar to the new 1-Series, which is still the base of this crossover.

The rest of the body promises a more muscular look, with slightly sharper lines and a more dramatic roofline. The new model still has to unveil itself but from what we can see, things look quite promising.

Interior

Spy photographers didn’t manage to take any interior shots yet, so we can’t go into details with this aspect of the new model. However, it’s not hard to conclude that most of the things will be the same as on the recently-introduced 1-Series. This particularly refers to the dashboard, which features a clean and stylish layout. Materials are fine and we definitely like the fact that there aren’t too many kitschy details. Compared t rivals like Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, this cabin looks more elegant, more mature. Also, more conservative drivers will definitely like the fact that a lot of physical buttons have remained on the dash.

The same or very similar size of the new 2022 BMW X1 indicates no bigger changes in terms of interior space. We presume that things will be quite similar in the new model, which means you may count on a couple of spacious rows of seats and a pretty generous cargo area for the segment.

2022 BMW X1 Engines

The current generation comes with a quite long list of engine options on the offer and we don’t expect that the 2022 BMW X1 will be much different. One of the highlights should be a plug-in hybrid version, just like in the current model. To remind you, the current generation uses a system that’s good for about 225 horsepower and needs less than seven seconds to hit sixty. Also, it offers around 35 of range in the all-electric mode. We presume the new model will come with improvements and offer more power and range.

The rest of the lineup should also remain quite similar. This means a couple of gasoline engines, with either three or four cylinders, in various output versions. A few diesel options will come as well. At this point, we are still unsure about hi-performance variants.

2022 BMW X1 Release Date and Price

The officials are still cautious with scheduling the launch date, so the best we could say at this point is that the new model will hit the market either late this year, or in the first quarter of 2022. The current model starts at around 36.000 dollars in North America and we don’t expect to see any significant increase with this redesign.
