The current generation of Mazda’s flagship crossover has been around for about four years but the latest reports suggest that the Japanese manufacturer doesn’t plan bigger changes for the next year. Simply, this is still one of the best crossovers on the market, despite that there are many younger and more up-to-date competitors. Simply, you will hardly find a mid-size crossover that offers such an amazing driving experience. The engine is powerful, but also pretty efficient at the same time. That’s one of the reasons why no one expects to see bigger changes for the next year.
Of course, there are many more reasons on the list, starting from a premium-grade interior and impressive build quality, long list of standard equipment and impressive aesthetics. We expect that the current generation will remain in production for a couple of more years and that bigger changes won’t come before complete overhaul.
2021 Mazda CX-9 Redesign
In terms of base design characteristics, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 won’t be much different compared to the initial model, which was launched four years ago. Of course, the core of this engine is a SkyActive platform, which delivers an impressive balance between performances and efficiency. This is one of the best crossovers around when it comes to handling and overall driving experience, while the comfort is on a high level as well.
Naturally, you may count on Mazda’s gorgeous aesthetics. This is one of the best looking models in the class without any doubt, despite that many new competitors look pretty amazing. Mazda still leads in this aspect, thanks to clean and smooth lines which automatically put this model in comparison with premium models. Therefore, we don’t expect any particular change for the next year. We might see some new color options in the offer, but most of the things will remain untouched.
The same thing goes for interior design. This is where Mazda shows its premium side, as it features one of the nicest cabins in the segments. Once again, we are talking about amazing aesthetics, which are combined with the impressive build quality. You can easily notice that the whole cabin is made of soft-touch materials and excellent craftsmanship. As you probably know, the current model came with some nice updates, including a new 9.0-inch touchscreen and we don’t expect to see bigger changes for the next year.
When it comes to the interior space, we may consider this as an aspect where CX-9 shows its weakness. Compared to most rivals, the CX-9 feels a little bit smaller on the inside. Still, keep in mind that this mostly refers to the third row and cargo area, which offers just around 14 cubic feet of behind the third row. On the other side, the first and the second row are pretty generous in terms of space, while second-row captain’s chairs are also available.
It’s always possible to see novelties on the list of standard equipment, so the 2021 Mazda CX-9 might come with couple of them as well. Still, we presume that most of the things will remain the same. Therefore, all models will come standard with a new 9.0-inch touchscreen, as well as with goodies like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, two USB ports, voice recognition, and internet radio integration with the Pandora, Aha, Stitcher etc. Among available features, we may expect to see things like satellite radio, second- and third-row dual USB ports, navigation, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system etc.
When it comes to safety features, all models current come standard with goodies like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist, a rearview camera, a traffic sign recognition system etc. We don’t expect to see bigger changes in the next year.
2021 Mazda CX-9 Engine
Things under the hood will definitely remain the same. You may count on the same 2.5-liter turbo-four, which offers a great balance between power and efficiency. With regular fuel, this engine delivers around 227 horsepower but if you pour premium gasoline, you may count on full 250 horsepower. In both cases, driving dynamics are pretty amazing, thanks to pretty impressive 320/330 pound-feet of torque.
At the same time, fuel economy is pretty good. You may count on above-average ratings, as this crossover returns around 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.
2021 Mazda CX-9 Release Date and Price
Considering that there are no bigger changes to come for the next year, we presume that the 2021 Mazda CX-9 will hit the market in a typical time of year, sometime in the last quarter of 2020. The price should also remain pretty much the same as for the current model, which starts at around 34.000 dollars. Some of the key competitors are models like Kia Telluride, Buick Enclave, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander etc.
