The mid-size 2021 Kia Sorento will be an all-new vehicle with plenty of updates. The first look provides enough details to wait for the upcoming SUV eagerly. The Korean carmaker is now a serious competitor in the market. The frequency of changes in the lineup and new projects promise that Kia will be one of the key manufacturers in the automotive industry. The update of Sorento is coming right after the debut of the larger Telluride. Meanwhile, we can hear rumors that the Korean company is working on the pickup truck.
But, let’s go back to our main topic. The premiere of the 2021 Kia Sorento showed us some stunning moves by designers. The SUV is bolder than ever. The vehicle seems to be longer than before. While the exterior styling might not be liked by everyone, improvements in the cabin are stunning to all. The new Sorento is a premium model at higher trim levels with high-quality materials all around the cabin. The digital display is the highlight of the interior.
That is not all about the new SUV. It will bring changes even under the hood. The hybrid model is based on a four-cylinder powerplant and it boasts the fuel economy. Still, if you want extra juice, then pick up a V6. We can hear that performance edition is also on the way, but it will be part of the first update in 2021.
If you take a look at the 2021 Kia Sorento and its predecessor, you will hardly find too many similarities. Well, both vehicles are seven-seaters. The fresh edition makes everything more interesting with a total overhaul of both interior and exterior.
Outside, the 2021 Sorento is restyled. The new design makes the SUV look longer. The new vehicle gained two more inches between bumpers. The extra stretch will be used for more space inside. Here are a few highlights.
The overall look is more aggressive and muscular. The tiger-nose grille boosts such an impression. Headlamps are narrow and fit perfectly into the front fascia. We can say these are the tiger eyes with LED lamps inside. The shape of the upcoming Sorento is boxier, with more sharp edges. The windshield is pushed backward, providing an extended look. Side panels are also using the same design language, while at the back we find new highlights.
2021 Kia Sorento Interior
Thanks to the extra length, designers had more room at disposal. The 2021 Kia Sorento will remain a three-row model, but with the new layout and materials. Everything looks better and the high-end models will stun you with its technology. The highlights are displays, with the 12-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen. Navigation is optional and Sorento offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two most popular smartphone services in the world.
The third row is not the best suit for adults. So, when you don’t need it, you can provide extra space by folding the rear bench and slide the second row. The total volume is still unknown, but there will be more room than before. The cabin is moved closer to the engine and overall length gained 2 inches.
The 2021 Kia Sorento will maintain a V6 as the main source of power. However, the existing engine is getting an alternative in a hybrid drivetrain. Plus, there is a turbo-four unit. Kia is not done with the updates under the bonnet since chiefs announced a possible plug-in hybrid. This one will use either a V6 powertrain or a diesel engine.
But, let’s check what each of these mills can offer. The V6 is the largest one in the lineup. A 3.3-liter displacement is good for 290 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. It is also the best hauler in the squad with towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. The bad thing is the fuel economy. With 22 mpg, it is below an average for the segment. The AWD harms it pretty much.
But, there are alternatives. A 2.5-liter turbo-four is a fresh powerplant, currently available on some Genesis vehicles. For the mid-size SUV, it will be able to crunch 280 hp. An eight-speed automatic transmission will send power to wheels, but the configuration won’t match V6’s towing capacity.
The most efficient unit is a hybrid. Based on a 1.6-liter turbo engine, the setup provides 227 horsepower. We still don’t have fuel economy ratings but expect the 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid to be close to 30 mpg. Toyota Highlander replaced a V6 engine with a four-pot unit in its hybrid system and now it returns 35 mpg.
