The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is going to introduce the PHEV version when it arrives by the end of this season. Last year the latest generation of the off-road 4×4 SUV was introduced and it immediately found a home in more than 200k garages. The arrival of the plug-in hybrid version is announced, but it still raises eyebrows. We got used to this off-roader, so it is questionable how will the PHEV model perform on tough terrains, or it will be available only for a longer 4-door version. The FCA told us enough, but still kept the most details about the SUV for the debut.
There are two main lines of the vehicle. Wrangler is a two-door compact model, which is a perfect solution for off-road adventures. On the other hand, the SUV with four doors you see more frequently on the streets is Wrangler Unlimited. It is 20-inch longer. Plus, there are interesting trim levels that will boost performance, or the convenience and overall comfort. You will be also able to choose drivetrains. Unfortunately, the new 2021 Jeep Wrangler is not getting the Hellcat engine.
2021 Jeep Wrangler PHEV
The biggest novelty for the upcoming season is the new drivetrain the off-roader is introducing. We can be sure that the vehicle is coming since test mules were spotted on a few occasions. On the other hand, there is no single detail about specs or the drivetrain.
The only lead is the Chrysler Pacifica minivan. Its hybrid configuration is using a 3.6-liter V6 petrol engine as the base. The popular Pentastar unit is a great powertrain that is easy to reconfigure for the electric system. The MPV is also capable to run by using only a 16 kWh battery, with a reach of 33 miles. Engineers will use similar technology for the Wrangler. However, this 4×4 vehicle is heavier and less aesthetic. On the other hand, it can get a larger battery.
All in all, we suspect that the setup will be similar to Pacifica Hybrid, but the 2021 Jeep Wrangler PHEV is also getting a retuning before the launch.
Three engines, two gasoline and one diesel are going to be here before the PHEV variant shows up. The base configuration, both for smaller or Unlimited SUV, starts with a 2.0-liter turbocharged drivetrain. A four-pot mill is producing 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is a power router. The 4×4 drive system makes this vehicle so popular. The special configuration also gets unique add-ons for some packages, such as Selec-Trac or Rock-Trac transfer cases.
If you need more power, then there is a standard setup for the Pentastar engine. The V6 returns 295 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. But, the power goes to all wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Optionally, you can pick a six-speed manual stick.
2021 Jeep Wrangler Diesel
Finally, the new 2021 Jeep Wrangler will also offer a diesel unit. This one could be the favorite among adventurers. But, its price will be slightly higher. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 is already available on the Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 truck. The EcoDiesel configuration produces less power than Duramax’s 3.0-liter mill. However, 260 horsepower, in combination with the class-leading 480 lb-ft of torque, is good for more than 11,000 pounds of towing capacity. An 8-pace auto gearbox is a power router in this configuration. We don’t have to mention how many wheels are getting the juice through this case.
2021 Jeep Wrangler Trim Levels, Options
First of all, you will have a choice – the standard 2021 Jeep Wrangler, or the longer 4-door Unlimited model. The other one is nearly 20 inches longer and the size pros and cons are obvious. It also gets total of 12 trim levels, while the Sport Altitude, Sahara, Sahara Altitude, and North Edition are not available with a two-door layout.
The entry-level SUV is Sport. Sahara and Rubicon are the most popular trim levels with the equipment ready for all kinds of off-road adventures. We already mentioned special transfer cases, but there are a lot more features that will enhance the ride in tough terrains.
Wrangler vs Ford Bronco
New images of the new Ford Bronco have finally leaked. We can’t see too much, but it is obvious that the legendary SUV is getting the Wrangler-like roof. The boxy top is a trademark of the Jeep’s best-selling off-roader. For a long time, we were guessing where the new Bronco is going to fit, and it seems like Wrangler is getting some serious competition.
Release Date, Prices
The new 2021 Jeep Wrangler will be mostly unchanged and the new PHEV version won’t be out before next year. Meanwhile, Ford will debut with the Bronco, so it can cause some reaction by the FCA. Anyway, the base price remains the same. A two-door SUV starts at $28,000, while you have to add $4,000 for the Wrangler Unlimited. Sahara package gets this vehicle up to $40k, while the Rubicon tops this mark.
