With the current lineup, Tesla already makes some pretty impressive sales numbers but it’s never enough of new models. Therefore, further, expansion is on the way, in the form of new models. Of course, the focus is on the most competitive segments of the automotive industry, so it’s no wonder that the next Tesla model to come will be a compact crossover. At this point, we already know most of the details about the new small SUV, including specs, dimensions and even prices. The new model will come as the 2021 Tesla Model Y and the first versions are about to hit the market already this fall.
From what we know at this point, there will be four versions of this crossover. Three of them will hit the market by the end of 2020, while the last one will come next spring.
2021 Tesla Model Y Specs
AS we’ve just mentioned, there are four versions of the 2021 Tesla Model Y to come. The most basic model will be simply called Standard Range RWD. As you can see, it will feature an RWD layout, while the max range will be pretty decent as well, around 230 miles. When it comes to performances, this version will be capable to hit 60 in about 5.9 seconds, while top speed will go around 120 miles per hour. Although a base version, this model will come last, next spring.
The Long Range RWD will feature a bigger battery and a little bit more power. As a result, it will need around 5.6 seconds to hit 60 mph, while a max range will go around 300 miles. This will be the version with the longest range in the offer.
Of course, AWD models will be in the offer as well. The Long Range AWD will be a pretty capable machine, with electric motors on both axles. From what we know at this point, this particular model will have a top speed of 135 miles per hour, while a 0-60 will go around 4.8 seconds. When it comes to the range, most reports suggest 280 miles.
The Performance version will need just 3.5 seconds to hit 60 miles while the top speed should go up to 150 miles per hour. This version will also feature a max range of 280 miles.
2021 Tesla Model Y Design
When it comes to design characteristics, it’s not hard to notice a lot of similarities with the Model 3. The 2021 Tesla Model Y will ride on the same platform, so dimensions will be quite similar as well. Still, the new crossover features a slightly longer wheelbase, as well as notably longer overall lengths. This will provide more space on the inside but if we talking about a crossover, you may count on notably more height, which goes up to 64 inches. If we consider that the ground clearance has been increased by 1.1 inches compared to Model 3, it’s obvious that this isn’t the only reason for such a big weight.
When it comes to the styling, the front end looks very similar to the popular sedan. On the other side, the rear end features a little bit different layout, which is designed in the manner of so-called coupe crossovers. Of course, the highlight of such a design approach is the sloping roof, but the interesting thing is that the 2021 Tesla Model Y will be available with three rows of seats anyway. How many limitations will this make in terms of the third-row headroom, it’s hard to say at this point.
2021 Tesla Model Y Interior
The first thing that comes to mind about the 2021 Tesla Model Y interior is the company’s typical design approach. We are talking about the familiar layout that looks futuristic but keeps things extremely simple. The dashboard is a pretty blend, but looks elegant at the same time, while all controls are located on the large touchscreen located at the center stack. We just hope that the company will improve the overall build quality, especially in terms of final touches, as this is usually seen as the biggest issue of models that come from this manufacturer.
When it comes to the interior space, the front row will be very generous, like in the case of Model 3. The second row should be decent as well, while the things about the options third row, which will cost an additional 3000 dollars, are still unclear. This particularly refers to the headroom, given the sloping roof design.
Release Date and Price
When it comes to the 2021 Tesla Model Y release date, Long Range RWD, Long Range AWD and Performance models are about to arrive by the end of the year. On the other side, the Standard Range model will arrive in spring 2021. Base models will go around 39.000 dollars, while the most capable Performance model should go around 61.000 dollars. Key competitors should be Jaguar I-Pace.
