The return of the 2021 Ford Excursion is more likely with the growth of the SUV class. Well, the situation with the COVID-19 virus will slow the development, but also hide the tests from fans. Excursion was the largest SUV ever, based on the F-250 truck. Now, extended versions of Ford’s and Chevy’s models are nearly as big as Excursion. The SUV class expands in all directions. Nowadays, we have utility models, off-road specialists, sporty and coupe versions, small crossovers, and big haulers. Knowing that we believe there is room for Excursion, which will take place above all existing models.
Super Duty lineup is refreshed for the current season. The F-250 is ready for new challenges. One of the plans is to bring back the Excursion, but also to launch another vehicle based on the same platform – Super Chief truck. But, this one is not likely to happen yet. The concept of the tri-fuel drivetrain was presented the same year when Ford decided to discontinue Excursion. Now, the SUV is coming back and it is interesting to see what it would look and what is under its hood.
2021 Ford Excursion Engines
The largest SUV in Ford’s lineup at this moment is Expedition. Unlike most other full-size SUVs, this one is getting power, not from a V8, but a twin-turbo V6 unit. Expedition generates 450 horsepower from a 3.5-liter engine. It is enough to beat Toyota Sequoia, Nissan Armada, Chevy Tahoe… But, the larger model will definitely need a V8 power and the Blue Oval manufacturer has a perfect solution – an all-new 7.3-liter displacement.
The so-called “Godzilla” engine is able to produce 430 horsepower, which is 20 ponies less than the turbo V6. However, towing capacity and off-road capabilities will get a boost. The engine is already available in the new series of F-250 truck and it seems a perfect replacement for a smaller predecessor. A 10-speed TorqShift transmission also transfers 475 hp to rear or all wheels. We are sure that the upcoming model will be able to carry at least 10,000 pounds.
Experts are divided in opinions about this one. It is certain that a larger SUV than Expedition is going to offer a diesel engine. But, which one? Based on an F-250 pickup, we can say the 2021 Ford Excursion could use the same unit as its sibling. But, a 6.7-liter turbodiesel is too much for this kind of vehicle. With 450 hp and 900 lb-ft, trucks can carry at least 15,000 pounds. Drivers of Excursion won’t tow so much cargo.
On the other hand, the new 3.0-liter turbodiesel is available on the F-150 truck. In this case, the power output drops to 260 hp and torque level is at 450 lb-ft. Still, this is enough energy to tow more than 11,000 pounds, which seems a perfect landing spot for the Excursion. Plus, we would say this engine would fit the possible Raptor edition, specialized for toughest tasks and terrains.
2021 Ford Excursion Styling
The 2021 Ford Excursion will use some of the existing styling solutions. We don’t think the huge SUV is going to borrow the design language from its smaller sibling, but it will be more like the new Super Duty segment. At least up front. The back of the SUV will definitely look like the Expedition. Inside, the new model will offer a combination of utility and infotainment to meet all the requirements. Of course, expect Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to be standard options, as well as some tricks that will make your work easier.
Ford has always been innovative. This is another proof of the company’s forward-thinking. Well, one of the reasons why experts and manufacturers believe 2021 Ford Excursion would succeed is the lack of competition. Some of the rivals in other segments are not in the full-size segment yet, and this is something only Ford has experienced. On the other hand, the previous experience is not so great. The predecessor lasted for only five seasons. Whatsoever, Ford is ready to take another challenge with a more efficient engine and extra power for towing.
Excursion would be better than Expedition in a few areas, including towing capacity and cargo space. So, this SUV is going to take on the truck segment more than any other model before. The crisis in the mid-size pickup class was caused by the versatility of SUVs, which could tow as much as utility vehicles, but they were more comfortable, fuel-efficient, and easier to drive.
When Will 2021 Ford Excursion Be Available?
Currently, the Blue Oval company puts a lot of effort into electrification of the existing lineup. With most models being updates recently, we believe that the chance for the 2021 Ford Excursion comeback is better than ever. The SUV could come out late this year or early next season. Many things depend on the development of the situation with coronavirus. Let’s hope that ends shortly and the new model is not going to be late.
