The premiere of an all-new 2021 Chevy Suburban is delayed again. This time, it is not because of the company’s fault, but the situation with the COVID-19. The virus is attaching all spheres of life, and the holdup is threatening seriously to the automotive industry. The vehicle was set to debut last year as the 2020 YM, but the company decided to prolong the premiere. Detroit Auto Show is moved from January to June, and it seems to be the perfect spot for the arrival of the new Suburban. But, the coronavirus situation is more than serious, and we still don’t know if the NAIAS is going to be held this summer.
However, when everything calms down, you can be sure that 2021 Chevy Suburban is going to be one of the first and biggest debuts in the industry. It comes together with Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Also, we could see the next-gen Cadillac Escalade riding on the same platform. Why is the arrival of the Suburban so special? The company is going to use the independent rear suspension for the first time. Also, the new generation of the full-size SUV will present a fresh look. First images are promising and we can’t wait to see the entire lineup in a few months.
2021 Chevy Suburban Specs
Under the hood of the 2021 Chevy Suburban will be powerful V8 lineup. There are two existing units already producing serious power. A lighter version is using a 5.3-liter displacement capable to deliver 355 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. A V8 unit is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, but the new version will pair it with a 10-pace gearbox to improve the ride and towing capacity. The minimum hauling capability is not going to be under 6,000 pounds. But, you can easily equip your Suburban to pull more.
The first option is to buy the towing package. However, the maximum towing capacity comes with a 6.2-liter V8 engine. This time, the 2021 Chevy Suburban will burst 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The new IRS will help this vehicle catch up with the outcome of the Ford Expedition, which can haul up to 9,300 pounds. A 10-speed automatic gearbox will become standard. The independent rear suspension is also going to improve off-road performance, although engineers already gave a boost with the special tuning.
At this point, we know the 2021 Chevy Suburban will carry a 3.0-liter Duramax diesel V6 powerplant. This unit is already available for the Silverado truck, with the class-leading 280 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Still, it is not enough to make this truck the best-in-class hauler. Compared to Chevy’s pickup, Ford and Ram can do more than 11,000 pounds, while Silverado stays under 10k. However, this is going to be enough for Suburban and Tahoe full-size SUVs.
The new unit could make the 2021 Suburban a performance-oriented SUV with a lot of ponies. It is a 4.2-liter twin-turbo unit, also available on the Cadillac CT6-V. Still, this is just a rumor, but the company is seriously thinking of the 550 hp rated drivetrain.
Independent Rear Suspension
This is definitely the biggest thing about the 2021 Chevy Suburban. The SUV is finally is going to rival Ford, although the GM is more than 10 years behind its main competition. The IRS improves the ride and off-road capabilities. However, it costs more. First of all, development is more expensive, as well as maintenance. But, the Suburban is not gaining too much on the price. But, the durability extends as well and diving impression gains a huge improvement.

Still, the MSRP shouldn’t start above $55,000 to keep the SUV competitive. Next season will bring a couple of more debuts, such as Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
