First teaser images are showing serious changes in the upcoming 2021 BMW X1. It seems like the redesign is certain, while we are still trying to find out if the company is about to launch the third generation of the subcompact crossover. This is the smallest unit in the family, but the German company is giving it enough attention. It is available in the US only as of the 28i model, either with a two- or four-wheel drive system. The new generation is going to expand the offer, probably with a hybrid unit.
In Europe and Asia, the luxury crossover is also offering plenty of other drivetrains. However, changes under the hood are not the main focus, but the redesign. The new look will make the 2021 BMW X1 more aggressive. Still, the carmaker is not providing any info yet. On the other hand, various sources confirmed rumors and some fans even made the first renderings.
The X1 will get an all-electric version by 2023. Meanwhile, we would like to see the xDrive25e in the US next season. The company is not making it official, but besides the redesign, updates under the hood are very probably.
2021 BMW X1 Specs
The main source of power for the 2021 BMW X1 is the 2.0-liter turbo-four unit. Engineers downgraded this engine by 20 horsepower compared to the more popular X3 CUV. For X1, the powerplant is ready to crunch 228 hp, which is still good for the subcompact class. The engine also creates 258 lb-ft of torque, while returning 28 mpg combined. If you choose an all-wheel drive (xDrive28i), the mileage drops by 1 mpg.
The new X1 is going to improve acceleration. The crossover activity vehicle will hit 60 mph in 6 seconds next season. The tuning of an eight-speed gearbox is one of the reasons. The requirement is a Sport mode. The other two options are Eco and Normal.
European buyers can find a couple of other petrol units available for the smallest BMW crossover. The company exploits 1.5-liter I3 turbo for 140 hp, or the same 2.0 displacement with 190 ponies. Other options include diesel variants with outputs between 115 and 230 hp, and 200-330 lb-ft of torque.
The plug-in hybrid hasn’t arrived in US shores yet. But, the 2021 BMW X1 might bring the new version. It is a system based on a 1.5-liter I3 engine. Thanks to electric motors, this crossover can provide 225 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque. The smaller displacement is more efficient than the petrol sibling. The Chinese version makes less energy.
We are also expecting news about the more powerful mill that should bring the M version. However, there is no confirmation for this speculation. But, we hope the BMW will surprise all its fans with the special edition of the X1. Well, with all-electric crossover coming in 2023, we will need another version to talk about.
2021 BMW X1 New Generation
The next-gen X1 is coming six years after a debut of the second series of the crossover activity vehicle (CAV). The company introduced the nameplate in 2009. The situation in the compact class changes pretty quickly and all carmakers have to update its vehicles every now and then. The new 2021 BMW X1 will get on the line with some new releases, such as Lexus UX, or Cadillac XT3. So, the German manufacturer will prepare something special.
A few photos leaked from magazines. According to sources, it is very probable that BMW let this happen to see what are the reactions of its fans. And they say – bring it on! The new styling shows interesting changes around the CAV. New headlights and bumpers are refreshing the front fascia. Also, the back of the crossover is boxier than before. The plug-in hybrid will come with unique styling, that will be eye-catching and easy to recognize on the streets.
Inside the cabin, there are a lot of things to improve. We cannot say room since it is limited on this vehicle. If you need space, then definitely the X3 or X5 are better choices. Whatsoever, the X1 will be able to take five passengers and provide enough comfort. The luxury model is using advanced technology. But, not all is working perfectly at the moment. For example, improvements in the Apple CarPlay are required.
2021 BMW X1 Release Date and Price
The premiere of the 2021 BMW X1 will be delayed from the initial date. Coronavirus put the whole industry on break. We hope the situation will be solved soon and that carmakers will continue the development of new units. One of them is an all-electric X1. The price in the US remains the same, with the sDrive28i starting at $35,000. The PHEV model will go above $40,000.
