The CX-9 is definitely one of the best models in the class. As a mid-size crossover that coquettes with the premium segment, it offers plenty of style and refinement. Also, it offers excellent handling and agile ride, so we can say it easily meets all the demands of today’s drivers. The current, second generation has been introduced in 2016. Given the expected production cycle, it won’t be a surprise if we see some updates for the next year. We could see a facelift, though changes shouldn’t be too intense, as the current model already looks amazing.
Also, keep in mind that the current year model has been updated with a new suspension and lots of new tech features. All in all, we have no doubt that the 2020 Mazda CX-9 will continue to deliver an amazing value for the money, while potential changes may indicate a little bit earlier arrival than usual.
2020 Mazda CX-9 Design
Various reports are suggesting that the 2020 Mazda CX-9 could come with updates. However, we have no doubt that base design characteristics will remain untouched. This refers to the platform and mechanics, especially if we consider that the current model has brought a couple of interesting novelties, particularly in terms of new suspension, which provide even better driving dynamics.
On the other side, we could see a couple of changes in terms of styling. Still, don’t expect to see anything significant, as the current model already features pretty impressive styling, based on the company’s famous KODO design language. Slight revisions on bumpers and tweaked grille are pretty much all we could see with these updates.
This aspect probably won’t receive too many changes with the potential update. The fact is that the CX-9 features some of the nicest cabins in the class. First of all, the dashboard offers plenty of style, while the quality of materials is amazing. Also, a list of standard and optional features is impressive. It is also good to mention that the recent update has brought improved sound insulation, so the new model is much quieter than before, no matter the driving conditions. All this indicates that bigger changes probably won’t come.
All these things sound amazing, but that doesn’t mean that the 2020 Mazda CX-9 will be without weak points. The same issues will carry on in the following years as well. Of course, we are talking about cabin space. Its cabin isn’t as spacious as some rivals, especially in terms of cargo volume. You can count on less than 15 cubic feet behind rear seats, which is way below average numbers for the class. Also, the third row is quite tight.
This crossover may feature less space than some rivals, but offers an impressive amount of standard and available tech features. All models are equipped with things like a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, two USB ports, Pandora and Stitcher apps, etc. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available in higher trims, starting from this year model. Other notable optional features are things like a bigger 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, premium audio system, satellite radio and many more.
Like previous year models, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 will also shine in this aspect. The list of standard and available safety systems and driver aids is impressive. All models feature things like a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support. Of course, you can get much more in higher trims. Some of the highlights are a traffic sign recognition system lane keep assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection and many more.
2020 Mazda CX-9 Engine
We have no doubt that the 2020 Mazda CX-9 will continue with the same engine under the hood. It is a familiar 2.5-lite turbo inline-four, which delivers around 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. If you pour premium fuel, the output goes up to full 250. Combined with a lot of torque and the models excellent handling and overall driveability, this amount of power actually provides better performances than most V6 rivals.
On the other side, a smaller displacement ensures good fuel economy, once again better than V6 rivals. With this crossover, you can count on about 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which are some of the highest ratings in the class. On the other side, towing capacity is way below average numbers for the class, as you can tow only 3.500 pounds.
2020 Mazda CX-9 Release Date and Price
Despite the potential updates, we don’t expect any earlier arrival of the 2020 Mazda CX-9. It should hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year. Also, the price should remain pretty much the same. The current model goes in a range between 32.000 and 46.000 dollars, roughly.
