Redesigned Jeep Cherokee is still fresh on the market. We are in the new year and the company still didn’t release the edition for 2019. They could skip it to give more time to buyers to get along with all the changes the facelift brought. At the same time, designers will prepare the first update for 2020 Jeep Cherokee. This vehicle has not many things in common with Grand Cherokee SUV, besides the name of course. Well, there are similar trim level packages, and we will see if the Cherokee is getting performance-oriented versions.
Again, the most interesting model will be the Trailhawk. This is an off-road crossover with a setup that will make 2020 Jeep Cherokee run across any obstacle. There are also Latitude and Sport versions. The new Limited edition is going to hit the market in 2020. Cherokee could also add some other trim level, especially if the vehicle gets a hybrid engine.
2020 Jeep Cherokee Specs
The base setup for the 2020 Jeep Cherokee includes a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. It is paired with a nine-speed automatic engine. This gearbox sends power to front wheels. The total output of this engine is 180 horsepower. It also creates 170 lb-ft of torque. The engine returns 23/31 mpg with 2WD and 21/29 mpg with AWD.
Jeep Cherokee Turbo
The major addition the facelift brought is a 2.0-liter turbo engine. This is the same unit the company used for the Wrangler. The advantage of this engine is high output at the small cost of fuel consumption. Well, the turbo unit consumes as much gasoline as a 2.4-liter engine. But, it is capable to create 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. A turbo engine is paired with the same transmission. It is also part of the Trailhawk model, but thanks to a different configuration, it returns only 23 mpg combined.
Turbocharged four-cylinder engine returns as much power as the V6 choice but consumes much less fuel. However, there are turbo lags that bother many owners of such units. Plus, the maintenance is an additional expense you must worry about. So, a V6 unit will bring peace of mind. A 3.2-liter mill is capable to produce 270 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. Well, this engine is not consuming too much more fuel than the four-pot siblings on the highway. Well, the rate drops to 20 mpg in urban areas. Trailhawk model will cost a lot, with fuel economy at 18/24 mpg. On the other hand, the towing capacity raises to 4,500 pounds which is the one of the best in class results. Turbo-4 can tow up to 4,000 pounds.
2020 Jeep Cherokee Trim Levels
If something is a big advantage of some model, that is a trim level offer of 2020 Jeep Cherokee. Even if the company drops any of the existing versions, it will still be a wide choice for any potential buyer. Everything starts with Latitude and Latitude Plus versions. Outside are 17-inch wheels and inside, a Uconnect infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM radio. The next level is Altitude, and its upper version, High Altitude, brings significant upgrades. Leather seats with unique stitching, 19-inch wheels, larger display, and navigation are standard.
The 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk upgrades the offer, although it comes with smaller wheels. All-terrain tires are wrapping them. Well, everything on this model is tuned for an off-road adventure. There is even upper version of this version, Trailhawk Elite. For the same amount of money, buyers can purchase Cherokee Overland. This one is not offering improved drive for off-road situations, but more premium features and equipment.
2020 Jeep Cherokee Price
So many options are making the price of the 2020 Jeep Cherokee go up and down. However, the difference between the entry-level and the most expensive versions is only $12,000. The base price is going to stay around $26,000 and under $30k we will see Altitude and Latitude Plus. High Altitude and Trailhawk are part of the mid-range offer with prices around $34,000. The most expensive versions of the compact crossover are Trailhawk Elite and Overland, both priced between $37,000 and $38,000.
Release Date and Competition
With the late appearance of the 2019 year model, we can expect the same from 2020 Jeep Cherokee. The crossover will debut in the second half of this season or even next year. Jeep Compass is still a competitive model, although the competition is growing every day. The major rivals are coming from Japanese carmakers. Honda CR-V and Toyota Rav4 are two leading crossovers. There are also domestic competitors Ford Escape and Chevy Equinox. VW is launching the new Tiguan, while Subaru Outback established itself as an important player on the market.
Most of its competition is either offering or working on a hybrid drivetrain. Experts doubt the FCA will launch such drivetrain for the 2020 Jeep Cherokee. But, in future, the crossover needs electrification if it wants to keep the pace with the competition.
