The next-generation of this compact crossover is definitely one of the most anticipated models for the next year in Europe. Originally introduced in 2008, the initial model was so good that the company’s management made a decision to offer it in Noth America as well. Since the second-generation model came, this crossover is also available on the U.S. market, under a more familiar name – Escape.
Two models are pretty much identical and, despite the age (the current generation has been around since 2012), very competitive in their segment. However, it is time to see some changes. So, the latest reports suggest that the new model is almost production-ready and should hit the market in the second half of the year. It will come as the 2020 Ford Kuga and we count on a full load of changes in all aspects, starting from a new styling, better driving dynamics, new tech features, and driver aids, etc.
2020 Ford Kuga Redesign
Both experts and potential buyers have big expectations from the 2020 Ford Kuga. This redesign is about to bring a lot of novelties, numerous improvements in various aspects. Still, the essentials will rather remain the same. So, you can count on a compact crossover that delivers a good driving experience, decent reliability, and a well-equipped and functional interior.
The first that comes to mind is the platform and things are pretty clear here. This crossover will once again share a big part of its design with the famous Focus hatchback, which in practice means a new architecture as well. The famous compact car arrived last year and it has brought a new, modular platform, which will underprint most of Ford’s models in the future. If we consider all those qualities of the new Focus, we can expect that the 2020 Ford Kuga will improve already amazing driving dynamics and handling, but deliver better efficiency as well.
Typically for the Blue Oval company, all future models will share the brand’s new design language. In practice, this means a lot of similarities with the new Focus. This particularly refers to the front end, which should be almost identical. Still, the new Kuga will have to accentuate its SUV-ish character. So, count on all those things that are common for this wannabe SUV, such as higher ground clearance, black plastic protection surfaces, more massive rear end, etc.
One of the things that we like most about new Ford models is that the company is quite reserved when it comes to the digitalization of the dashboard. Therefore, we have no doubt that the new 2020 Ford Kuga will come with a good balance between digital and physical controls. Count on an analog instrument cluster, climate controls
As we already mentioned, bigger changes in terms of size shouldn’t come. So, count on a similar amount of space inside the cabin. The current model is pretty generous in terms of leg- and headroom, which indicates the same thing with the new Kuga as well. Another thing to mention is cargo volume. The current model offers 34 cubic feet behind rear seats and the new model will probably come with similar figures.
We expect that Ford engineers will focus on this aspect of the new Kuga as well. Of course, this means a lot of new, advanced driver aids and similar things. However, the bigger problem with the current model is its chassis design. Simply, safety crash scores aren’t as good as they should be. We hope this issue will be solved with this redesign.
European drivers still prefer oil-burners, despite that most governments favorize electrified cars. Therefore, we have no doubt that the new model will continue with a familiar 2.0-liter diesel engine, which currently comes in several output variants. Of course, we expect to see a couple of modifications that will bring a little bit more power, better fuel economy and improved overall efficiency.
On the other side, petrol lineup should start with a 1.5-liter EcoBoost unit. It will probably come in two output variants, with either 150 or 180 horsepower. A bigger 2.0-liter engine should be in the offer as well. It is good for about 240 horses and should be reserved for performance versions.
Eventually, a hybrid model will probably come in the near future, but definitely won’t be ready for the initial launch.
2020 Ford Kuga Release Date and Price
We expect to see 2020 Ford Kuga on the market sometime in the second half of the year, probably in the third quarter. Details about the price should be announced soon, though we don’t expect to see bigger deviations from the current model.
