The Blue Oval company makes final preparations to launch the new-generation 2020 Ford Explorer. The famous nameplate has been around for decades. In the past, it was reserved for typical body-on-frame SUVs. These days, we are talking about a modern crossover, which offers great driving experience, high level of comfort and a lot of other benefits. The upcoming model had its premiere recently.
From what we have seen, there is a lot of novelties to come. Like any other redesign, this one will also bring new aesthetics. However, changes will be more significant this time, as we are about to see a completely different platform that underprints the new crossover. Of course, count on novelties under the hood, as well as a completely new interior. Finally, the company prepares some new safety features and advanced driver aids. The 2020 Ford Explorer is expected to hit the market this summer.
2020 Ford Explorer Redesign
Without any doubt, the 2020 Ford Explorer redesign is bringing tons of novelties. The first thing that comes to mind in a new platform. The new model will ride on the company’s new CD6 platform, which features a completely new layout compared to the outgoing model. Many of us were delighted when we found out that the new model will feature a rear-wheel drive. The new architecture is planned for several new models in the future, including the next-generation Mustang as well. Of course, AWD will be available as well.
Another important thing to mention is that the 2020 Ford Explorer will come with significant changes in terms of dimensions. The overall size may look pretty similar to the current model, but the wheelbase is significantly longer in the new model, for about six inches. This clearly indicates that the new model is aiming Chevy Traverse as the key rival. Such a design will definitely bring many benefits, including a more spacious interior. Also, the overhangs are shorter, which in practice means greater off-road potential, due to the increase of approach and departure angles.
When it comes to the aesthetics, the 2020 Ford Explorer adapts to the brand’s newest design language. Despite the longer wheelbase, the overall shape seems quite close to the outgoing model. Proportions may be the same, but you can count on significantly improved aerodynamics. Of course, there is a completely new face. Compared to the outgoing model, we haven’t seen any radical change.
The new model comes with evolutionary changes, but that doesn’t mean that changes at the front are insufficient. Everything is new, starting from headlights and a grille that features new shape and beautiful new mesh pattern. Of course, the bumper is also new and you can easily notice sharper lines, new fog lights and a plethora of other things. On the other side, the rear end somehow looks very similar to the previous model, despite everything is new.
As we already mentioned, the 2020 Ford Explorer features a significantly longer wheelbase. So, it’s no wonder that there is more space on the inside. First of all, there more legroom, but cargo volume has been enlarged as well. Interestingly, the company also claims the class-leading headroom.
Besides obvious improvements in terms of space and functionality, the 2020 Ford Explorer also comes with completely new interior design. The first thing you’ll notice is a completely new dashboard. It looks more attractive and more upscale, due to a lot of horizontal lines. Also, there is a completely new instrument cluster, which is digital but designed in a quite stylish manner, with excellent transparency. All materials seem of great quality and the overall impression is that the new model looks more luxurious from the inside.
2020 Ford Explorer Engines
When it comes to the powertrain, you can count on at least three engine options. Base models will feature a well-known 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost unit, which in this case delivers around 300 horsepower. Higher trims will be equipped with the company’s new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, which comes in two output variants.
Base versions are good for about 365 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. A more powerful version is reserved for the performance ST version and delivers around 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. All models are paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission and, as well already mentioned, it sends power to rear wheels. All-wheel drive is available as well.
Besides gasoline engines, the new Explorer should come in a hybrid variant as well. At this point, we don’t know details and it looks like the new powertrain won’t be ready for the initial launch, It will rather come in about a year or two.
2020 Ford Explorer Release Date and Price
The new 2020 Ford Explorer already had a premiere and we are eagerly waiting for its launch. According to the latest reports, that will happen this summer. When it comes to the price, base models should go around 34.000 dollars.
