The current generation of this subcompact crossover has been around since 2013. That doesn’t seem too much, at least at the first look. However, things are much different in reality. This model desperately needs a redesign if the company wants to be competitive in the segment of small SUVs. Simply, it lacks in so many aspects compared to the competition. Outdated design, lackluster engines, lack of essential safety features and questionable interior quality are just some of the drawbacks. It also has a couple of strong points, including a pretty spacious cargo area, but that definitely isn’t enough to be competitive is such a highly-demanding segment. Therefore, a complete overhaul should happen in the near future. Unfortunately, the 2020 Ford Ecosport will remain unchanged. Count on same characteristics, while the redesign could come already in the next year. Therefore, expect to see it on the market late in the year.
2020 Ford Ecosport Redesign
The are many things in this crossover we can complain about and that’s not strange at all. Despite it has been around for about five years, this small SUV looks even older. The main reason lays in the fact it shares the platform with the older-generation Fiesta. Therefore, its driving experience isn’t spectacular at all. Dull handling and unimpressive engines are the first things you’ll notice about the EcoSport. Also, its styling is based on the brand’s previous-generation design language, so it isn’t particularly attractive for today’s standards either. On the other side, it features a decent ground clearance, as well as a pretty high driving position, so it will more robust than it actually is.
Unfortunately, the 2020 Ford Ecosport will remain completely the same. We will have to wait for another year or two to see a complete redesign. The best we could see for the next year are new colors, though even this doesn’t sound very likely.
The cabin is definitely where this crossover shows its age. The overall interior quality is quite questionable. Hard plastics are generally a typical thing for the class, but the dashboard and the rest of the cabin feature a pretty outdated styling, compared to younger competitors.
Another complaint goes to comfort. Front seats are spacious and comfortable, but adults definitely won’t feel much comfortable in the second row. While headroom seems decent, the legroom definitely doesn’t, even for the class of subcompact crossover. On the other side, the cargo area seems okay. You can count on 21 cubic feet behind rear seats, while the overall capacity goes up to 50 cubic feet, which are pretty good numbers for the class. Also, it is good to know that the cargo doors are side hinged, which isn’t that often case among subcompact crossovers.
Tech and Safety Features
Most basic versions of this crossover don’t feature a too long list of standard equipment. Count on a small 4.2-inch display, as well as on things like Bluetooth and a couple of USB ports. Still, you can get much more in higher trims. Some of the highlights are bigger 6.5- and 8-inch touchscreens, satellite radio, HD radio, navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a seven- or nine-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto etc.

The 2020 Ford Ecosport will continue with two familiar gasoline engines in the offer. Base models will feature a small 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit, which is good for about 123 horsepower. You probably won’t save too much fuel, so an optional, two times bigger four-cylinder engine is definitely a much better choice. This one is good for about 166 horsepower and it offers notably better performances, particularly in terms of acceleration.
When it comes to fuel economy, the base three-cylinder returns around 27 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, while the optional four-cylinder is good for about 23 mpg in the city and on the highway. The good thing about this small SUV is that you can count on pretty decent towing rating, considering the class. With the optional engine, this small crossover can tow up to 2.000 pounds.
2020 Ford Ecosport Release Date and Price
We don’t expect to see too many changes for the 2020 Ford Ecosport. Therefore, it should hit the market sometime late in the year. The price shouldn’t change either, so base models are expected to go around 20.000 dollars.
