For standards of the segment of subcompact crossover, the current-generation Trax is a quite old vehicle. Simply, the competition in this class is so tough that quick production cycles are a must. Therefore, the 2020 Chevrolet Trax is about to come completely redesigned. The popular small crossover is about to receive a complete overhaul, which will include lots of mechanical and aesthetical changes.
The testing model has been spotted for a couple of times and it clearly shows that the new generation will look much more serious. Still, we count on much more than just new aesthetics, as the current model has a lot of issues that should be solved if the company wants to make the new model successful. In any case, the new model is expected to come by the end of the year. It will compete in the same class, with the same competitors, so we don’t expect bigger changes in price either.
2020 Chevrolet Trax Redesign
One of the first things that come to mind is the platform. At this point, we don’t have any reliable information about it, though it looks pretty certain that the familiar Gamma II will carry on for some more time. Of course, we count on various upgrades of this architecture, which will make it up to date. The current model has several weak points which could be solved with this platform update.
Most of them refer to the overall efficiency, as the current model features a below-average fuel economy. Another issue refers to driving characteristics, as both dynamics and handling aren’t on the level you would expect from a modern crossover. It is also expected that the new model will come with changes in size. It should become a little bit larger, which would be highly beneficial in terms of cargo volume and rear-seat legroom.
The new-generation 2020 Chevrolet Trax is in the final stage of development. The testing model has been a spotter for several times this year. Every time it came with less camouflage. The last time we saw it on the road this model clearly showed that the new Blazer will serve as an inspiration for the new styling. The recently-introduced mid-size crossover established a completely new design language, which will be used for all future models from Chevy.
Therefore, expect to see pretty much the same front end, as well as the quite similar overall shape. Practically, this should be a Blazer in a much smaller package. In practice, this means a much more attractive appearance compared to the current generation, with a more rugged, SUV-like character.
It still seems early to talk about this aspect of the new 2020 Chevrolet Trax. At this point, we can only speculate about it and the first thing that comes to mind is interior space. As we already mentioned, the new generation is expected to grow for a bit. This would mean more legroom in the second row, as well as a more generous cargo volume. Another thing that comes to mind is interior quality. Chevy models are usually not so great on the inside, as the company prefers to use lower-quality materials. We will see if something is going to changes with the 2020 Chevrolet Trax.
On the other side, count on a generous list of standard features, which would include lots of latest tech features, as well as numerous advanced driver aids and other safety systems.
2020 Chevrolet Trax Engines
This is the aspect of the car where we definitely expect to see some improvements. The current model comes with just one engine in the offer, which is good for about 138 horsepower. It doesn’t feature any spectacular performance, but below-average fuel economy seems like an even bigger problem. Therefore, the 2020 Chevrolet Trax is expected to come with some more up to date engines in the offer. Most likely, it will borrow the engines from the recently presented Buick Encore.
North American versions will probably come with a new 1.3-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is good for about 160 horsepower and should be available in AWD layout as well. Also, we expect to see even smaller 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit offered on some abroad markets.
Release Date and Price
At this point, it is still early to talk about some more specific details about the price and release date. Still, we may presume that the new model will probably hit the market sometime in the third quarter of the year. When it comes to the price, we don’t expect to see too big deviations from the current model, which starts at around 21.000 dollars.
Competition in the segment is extremely tough and we doubt that even the new 2020 Chevrolet Trax will be able to match Japanese and Korean models. On the other side, it should be a strong rival to Ford EcoSport, Jeep Renegade and similar crossovers.
