After the redesign in 2019, the 2020 BMW X5 will bring more excitement. But, it is happening in the performance class. Already now we have announcements of a new M package. Nevertheless, that is not going to be the only addition and change for the 2020 edition. Besides small cosmetic updates, there is a brand-new hybrid drivetrain on the way. There is no too much info about it, but rumors are claiming that leaking sources have confirmed this.
The German manufacturer released photos and technical details of the new, fourth-generation X5. Previously, the third generation was in production only for 5 years. That is two years shorter than the first and second generation, which lasted 7 years each on the market. Compared to the predecessor, the new 2020 BMW X5 will be 1,5 inches longer and 2,5 inches wider. The SUV is also more spacious than before.
2020 BMW X5 Specs
Initially, four engines, two petrol mills and two diesel powertrains, will be available to customers around the world. The base gasoline version will be a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder that produces 340 hp (250 kW) and 330 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. That is a significant boost to 300 hp from the previous generation. Equipped with this aggregate, the 2020 BMW X5 will sprint from standstill to 60 mph in 5.5 sec. Top speed for this version is 150 mph.
Despite the current controversy over diesel engines, BMW has maintained two such aggregates, primarily due to customers in Europe. The base, 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder delivers 265 hp (195 kW) and 620 Nm (547 lb-ft) of maximum torque. The most powerful version on the European market, until the new X5 M comes, is the X5 M50d. A 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine with 4 turbochargers bursts over 400 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque.
2020 BMW X5 M
Customers who want an even more powerful engine have the X5 xDrive50i motor. It is the well-known 2020 BMW X5 M version. A twin-turbo 4.4 V8 unit with 462 hp (350 kW) and 480 pound-feet of torque hit 60 mph in only 4.7 seconds. Here, max speed is 155 mph. This version will not be available on the European market.
Besides the engine upgrade, this version will see the new equipment and features. We still don’t know exactly what to expect. However, expect even more luxurious and elegant cabin.
2020 BMW X5 Hybrid
All these technologies we just watched only as prototypes are already part of our everyday life. BMW also have credits for the increase of hybrid’s popularity. Everything started with BMX X5 xDrive40e model in 2015. It is also the first hybrid model of the Bavarian manufacturer without the “i” label.
With success right from the start made the German carmaker develop this segment. Now, we will see the brand-new system for 2020 BMW X5 Hybrid. The company will keep a 2.0-liter unit as the base for the configuration. New electric motors and other parts will make this system fuel-friendlier and more powerful.
2020 BMW X5 Release Date
The edition for 2019 will arrive by the end of this year. Since the SUV hits the new generation, the vehicle will need some time to show off. So, the 2020 BMW X5 is not in the rush to come out. Well, without big changes, the base model is not so interesting. On the other hand, we can’t wait to see what does M package is going to bring. A lot of surprises and high expectations are the two sure things.
Also, updates about the hybrid system and specs are not going to be available any time soon. This version could be launched in 2020, although some tests are already ongoing. Finally, before we know more details, we can’t predict pricing for the new 2020 BMW X5. The main competitor for this crossover will be Audi Q7.
