You probably know that German car maker is starting new naming-policy. This time it is turn for a flagship model, when it is about SUV. A full-size luxury SUV that used to be called GL will be renamed to GLS, in order to stand as the S-Class of the SUVs, which is much more coherent name in our opinion. This model was originally launched in 2006. It was redesigned in 2012, when it came with plenty of improvements. After three years of production, it will get a new name. However, beside the name, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS will also come with several modifications, as some kind of a mid-cycle refresh, probably earlier that you would expect.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS design and changes
As we already said, beside the name, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS will also come with several modifications. The most of the changes will be about models visual appearance. The testing model has been spied and although it wears some camouflage. Most of the details are pretty much known. Since old-named GL featured pretty much the same look as old M-Class. It is expected that this trend will continue, so it will suffer all of the changes that we saw on recently-revealed GLE model.
Basically, we will see most of the 2016 GLS changes at the front end, where things like new headlights and grille will be installed. Rear end will be modified too, and it will now look sportier and feature new taillights. When it is about changes inside, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS will also come with numerous changes. We will see new steering wheel, redesigned control board, new infotainments system and plenty of other hi-tech updates and upgrades.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS under the hood
When it is about engines, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS should continue with the same units in offer. The base GLS 450 will use a 4.7 liter V8 with 362 hp. Same engine will be used for the GLS 500/550 model, but it will be tuned up to 430 horsepower. Finally, there is a GLS 63 AMG which uses 5.5 liter V8 with 550 horses, but which could easily come tuned up for this update. When it is about diesels, there is a GLS 350d, which is powered with 3.0 liter V6, which has max output of 256 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. All engines are paired with 7-speed automatic transmission.
2016 Mercedes-Benz release date and price
The exact date of launch is still unknown, but there are some predictions that 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS could be presented already in November at the LA Auto Show. Base model should cost around 63.000 dollars.
